Relay For Life of South County

Relay For Life of South County Relay For Life South County serves to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease

Everyone's reason to Relay is as unique as their own personal story. At Relay, you can find healing, comfort, and support from others who have faced cancer or who have lost a loved one to the disease. You have a chance to meet people in the community who are equally as passionate about finding an end to cancer. No Matter why you take part in Relay, however, one thing is clear, with every step you take, you help the American Cancer Society save lifes.

Cancer screenings can’t wait.

While cancer screenings have been delayed because of COVID-19, cancer hasn’t stopped. Less preventative care now means later stage diagnoses and more preventable cancer deaths.

We’re joining with the National Comprehensive Cancer Network and 74 other leading health organizations to encourage the prioritization of cancer screening: now is the time to resume preventative and prescribed care in coordination with your health care provider.

While multiple community-based projects are identifying local solutions to advance health equity, we can and must do more. Thank you, David Ford, for championing cancer health equity alongside us. We are in this fight together.

On December 18, 2020, the U.S. Senate passed legislation aimed at improving access to clinical trials for communities of color and decreasing health disparities.

The Henrietta Lacks Enhancing Cancer Research Act works to increase access and remove barriers to participation in federally sponsored cancer clinical trials among communities that are traditionally underrepresented. The bill is named after a Black woman who died from cervical cancer and whose cells, taken without her knowledge or consent during her treatment, have been used to develop some of modern medicine’s most important breakthroughs, including the development of the polio vaccine and treatments for cancer, HIV/AIDS and Parkinson’s disease.

Black History Month is not only a time to celebrate and reflect on the contributions of African Americans, but also a time to highlight disparities in which the American Cancer Society is advocating for change. Many factors impact a person's ability to prevent, find, treat, and survive cancer. ACS believes nobody’s cancer fight should be harder because of the color of their skin.

Every year, nearly 9 million people worldwide die from cancer. Internationally, deaths each year from cancer greatly outnumber deaths from HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria combined. By 2040, the global cancer burden is expected to increase to 29.5 million new cases and 16.4 million deaths annually.

World Cancer Day, observed each year on February 4, offers the Society an opportunity to increase awareness that cancer has no borders. It is an opportunity to remind the global community that your American Cancer Society is a leader in the fight for a world without cancer.
