๐๐š๐ข๐ง ๐ฉ๐จ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ž๐ฌ in your equine partner. Some are more obvious. Some are more subtle.

Horses are telling us all the time their comfort level and itโ€™s important that we are able to gather information about our horse just based on their stance or posture. Here are some of the common postures horses exhibit that could indicate they are not comfortable.

๐’๐ญ๐š๐ง๐๐ข๐ง๐  ๐จ๐ฎ๐ญ: Standing out is when either the front limb(s) is stretching forward or the hind limb(s) is stretching back. This term can also be called โ€œcamped outโ€ or we also refer to a horse standing out one of their front limbs as โ€œpointing.โ€ When I see a horse standing out one of their front limbs there can be multiple reasons, but it is usually pain stemming from the distal limb. A good majority of the time a horse standing out a front limb is trying to take pressure off their heel, which indicates a hoof related or soft tissue issue.

๐’๐ญ๐š๐ง๐๐ข๐ง๐  ๐ฎ๐ง๐๐ž๐ซ: A horse standing under themselves means that their front limbs or hind limbs are towards the center line of the body. This posture is more commonly seen in the hind end. When I see a horse standing under it is a sign of discomfort. For example, when a horse has a hind suspensory strain, desmitis etc. it is common for them to stand that limb under themselves. That is but one example, when a horse is standing under a hind limb we can have other culprits to the pain that can be stemming from the SI, stifle, hock, or bad hoof angles. Now occasionally I have come across a horse that is standing under front and hind, trying to give support to the centerline of their body, when I see this I know Im dealing with a plethora of issues that have now compensated and resided in multiple areas of the body.

๐‚๐จ๐ง๐ฌ๐ญ๐š๐ง๐ญ ๐ฌ๐ก๐ข๐Ÿ๐ญ๐ข๐ง๐ : This one seems to be one that goes the least noticed because horses like to rest their hind limbs when resting, standing for long periods etc. Constant shifting is when a horse is resting one limb then shifting to rest the other limb and going back and forth. This constant shifting in the hind end is a good indication of pain or discomfort whether from the hocks, SI tension, or tight hamstrings. This can be seen in the front end more evidently because usually the horse will be standing out one front limb then shifting to standing out the other front limb and so on.

๐๐š๐ฌ๐ž ๐ง๐š๐ซ๐ซ๐จ๐ฐ: Another indication of pain that goes more unnoticed. When a horse is standing base narrow this means that their hooves are standing closer together than their shoulders or hips. I commonly see a lot of horses standing base narrow in the hind. This is a subtle indication of pain and to make a better assessment more information is needed, but my general suspicion for a bare narrow hind is pelvic or hip pain, possibly psoas, along with lumbar/SI pain. If the front end is base narrow I will address possible thoracic sling dysfunction or hoof related issue. Horses that are standing base narrow will land lateral wall first making medial-lateral hoof imbalance which can cause other issues.

๐๐š๐ฌ๐ž ๐ฐ๐ข๐๐ž: Base wide is the opposite of base narrow where the horseโ€™s limbs are standing out further than the shoulders or hips. This one is less commonly seen. But if I do come across this stance I would assess if the horseโ€™s muscles are so hypertonic and restricted that the horse can no longer stand squarely. Horses that are standing base wide will land medial wall first making medial-lateral hoof imbalance.

There are many more postures that I notate when assessing a horse, but these are the most common notations. So it is important to observe any conformational issues the horse has been born with that may influence their posture. A horse that has poor conformation may not be capable of a different stance such as, a sickle hocked horse will always have a โ€œstanding underโ€ look to them. On the contrary, a horse that is conformationally correct and chooses to influence their posture in a way to protect themselves or alleviate pain is valuable information for owners.

Horses that are having to adapt to a posture to alleviate pain if left unresolved, the body will start to conform and the muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, will re-align the body to this new adapted posture making it more difficult to return the body to a square, normal state. As Iโ€™ve discussed many times, horses are masters at masking pain or dysfunction, they are prey animals, that's how they have survived for many lifetimes, a prey animal does not want to be seen as weak and vulnerable so the body will compensate and reconform to hide the pain as best as it can. It is our job to find and notice these indications before it becomes a whole body issue.

**In addition: to clarify since some do not know what I do or what this page is about. The horse in the photo is receiving an acuscope treatment, which is a very advanced therapeutic modality that helps accelerate healing, manage chronic conditions, and alleviate pain. RECALIBRATE Series
Recalibrate is utilized to start all new patients. It begins with a3-phase evaluation process. A visual observation is performed, followed with a manual observation. The process is completed utilizing the biofeedback system of the Acuscope, takingreadings of multiple acupoints. This is necessary to pinpoint areas of cellular dysfunction and assist in developing a treatment program with the patientโ€™s specific needs in mind. Next, aloading series of 3 Acuscope/Myopulse sessions are completed. This lays the foundation for optimal results down the road. Each session builds upon the one prior, having a cumulative effect. These sessions are required to be performed 3 consecutive days in a row or a minimum of 12 hours apart.
*The Recalibrate Program is required for all new patientsrequesting Acuscope/Myopulse Therapy. A repeat of Recalibrate may be required if the patient has not been seen in 90+ days.

This will be for a 3 day haul in at C2 facility. All winners in each D will be put in a bucket at the end of the 3 series thank you C2 Performance Therapy, LLC !!
