Recovery Doesn’t Have to Stop When Skilled Therapy Ends ❤️

Meet Tom—a stroke survivor whose journey with NeuroAxis is a perfect example of what it means to keep recovery moving forward.

Tom was initially referred to NeuroAxis after being discharged from home health for in-home outpatient PT and OT. Our team began working with him right in his assisted living facility, helping him regain strength, mobility, independence, and confidence.

From there, Tom transitioned to our Neuro Recovery Center, where he continued skilled PT and OT with our team. And when his skilled therapy came to an end, we didn’t want his progress to end with it.

Because Tom doesn’t have someone at his facility who can help him consistently complete his home exercise program and stay active, he transitioned into NeuroActive, our wellness-based program designed to help individuals maintain the progress they worked so hard to achieve during skilled therapy.

Now, Tom works with our Mobility Companions twice a week, continuing to exercise, move, and build on the gains he made through therapy.

And perhaps our favorite part of Tom’s story? He gets himself here. 🚌

Tom uses Freedom Transit public transportation to travel from his assisted living facility to the Neuro Recovery Center and back home—helping remove transportation and access barriers that could otherwise prevent him from continuing his recovery.

This is exactly why we created NeuroActive.

Because recovery shouldn’t stop simply because insurance-covered skilled therapy ends. Everyone deserves the opportunity to keep moving, keep working toward their goals, and keep making progress.

Watch Tom share his experience in his own words. ❤️

Christopher’s Progress 💙

Five years ago, at just 21 years old, Christopher experienced a stroke that changed his life. After years of working toward recovery, he was finally approved for Vivistim paired VNS therapy—and in less than two months, we are already seeing incredible changes.
Christopher is now working on tasks that require the precise hand function he has been fighting to regain:

👟 Tying his shoes
🤏 Picking up small objects
✍️ Signing his name
🧱 Building LEGO sets
🎮 Playing video games

And perhaps most importantly, he is excited about what his body can do again and what his future looks like!

Watching him discover new possibilities with his hand function has been incredible. These may seem like small everyday tasks, but for someone who has spent five years recovering from a stroke, they represent independence, confidence, and hope.

We couldn’t be more excited to see where the next chapter of Christopher’s recovery takes him. This is just the beginning. 💙

You all have asked… so here you go! This is how we set up the quadruped support using a hoyer lift.

We purposely used a large hoyer lift to show it’s still possible and safe using a larger sling!

You can position the sling to under their chest, mid abdomen or under the hips depending what YOU want to challenge.

A special shout out to John for helping us demonstrate how we set this up and always being down to try our crazy ideas! 👏

One of the biggest challenges in neuro rehabilitation is achieving the high repetitions needed to drive neuroplasticity.

We recently started using the MetaFlex® to assist with hand and finger extension to allow patients to achieve more quality repetitions each session- and the results speak for themselves!

Next up, using the MetaFlex glove as a tool for error augmentation for grasp 👀

And a huge shout out to J.J. Mowder PT for introducing us to Steph Comella | Pilates+ for SCI | Educator & Coach ‘s squish balls, they are a therapists dream! 🔥🔥

Some people leave a legacy that continues to inspire long after they’re gone. Dave was one of those people.

Dave was one of the very first stroke survivors Kelsey had the privilege of working with when NeuroAxis began. Together, they challenged expectations, celebrated every milestone, and proved that recovery doesn’t stop after the first few months—it continues when therapy is meaningful, functional, and centered around what matters most to each individual.

Dave loved being outdoors. His passion for nature helped shape our belief in the power of salient, activity-based therapy, reminding us that the most meaningful rehabilitation happens when we incorporate the activities our patients truly love into their recovery journey.

Throughout his recovery, Dave accomplished incredible things. He completed a 5K alongside Kelsey, threw the ceremonial first pitch for Stroke Awareness Night, and courageously shared his story on Talk Pittsburgh to inspire other stroke survivors to never give up on themselves or their recovery.

Today, a Memorial Garden at the Neuro Recovery Center stands in Dave’s honor. It is a peaceful place to reflect, celebrate resilience, and remember a man whose determination helped shape not only our approach to rehabilitation, but the heart of our clinic.

Thank you, Dave, for believing in us from the very beginning. Your strength, your kindness, and your unwavering determination will forever be a part of NeuroAxis and the countless lives that continue to be impacted because of your legacy. 💙
