Pancreatic cancer has long been one of the clearest examples of why patients desperately need research to create new options rather than simply variations of old ones. A drug targeting a pathway researchers once considered extremely difficult to drug has now moved from the laboratory → to clinical trials → to patients like Barbara → and finally to FDA approval.
This is what “research is turning hope into more time” actually looks like.

Back-to-school season is exciting, but for families living with metastatic cancer, it can also bring another round of expenses at an already difficult time.

Backpacks. School supplies. New shoes and clothes. Lunch money. School fees. It adds up quickly.

Have you met with an interventional radiologist?
A dietitian?
A patient navigator?
A social worker?
A palliative care specialist?
A physical or occupational therapist?
A mental health professional?

These professionals can address needs that go beyond treating the tumor—from nutrition and side effects to mobility, emotional well-being and navigating the healthcare system.

Biomarker testing is creating more options for cancer patients. City of Hope highlighted how testing ovarian tumors for folate receptor alpha (FRα) can identify patients who may benefit from newer targeted therapies. It’s another example of precision medicine changing the conversation from simply asking what kind of cancer is this? to also asking what is driving this particular patient’s cancer, and can we target it?

Before we head into the weekend, here’s your reminder:
Hope doesn’t always have to be big.
Sometimes hope is a good scan.
Sometimes it’s a new treatment option.
Sometimes it’s getting through a hard week.
Sometimes it’s laughing when you didn’t think you could.

And sometimes it’s simply deciding to try again tomorrow.

Russ, a Utah grandfather, faced pancreatic cancer three decades after losing his mother to the same disease at the same age. His story took a dramatically different turn when he gained access to the investigational targeted drug daraxonrasib through a clinical trial at Huntsman Cancer Institute. The drug has produced some of the most encouraging results seen in metastatic pancreatic cancer in years, and Russ's experience puts a very human face on what that progress can mean for patients and families.
The story was published August 7.
