Reinforcement and Bribery Are Not the Same.

The difference often comes down to timing, purpose, and consistency.

✅ Reinforcement is planned in advance. A child knows which skill or behavior is being encouraged, and the positive outcome follows their effort.

⚠️ Bribery is usually offered unexpectedly during a difficult moment to make the behavior stop immediately.

Effective reinforcement helps children understand expectations, practice useful skills, and experience success. It should be individualized, realistic, and gradually adjusted as skills develop. 🧩

Every child develops differently, but developmental guides can help parents recognize emerging skills and notice when additional support may be useful. 💚

If your child is not meeting several milestones, loses a skill they previously had, or something simply feels different, consider speaking with a qualified professional.

Early identification does not mean labeling a child. It creates an opportunity to better understand their strengths, needs, and next steps. 🤍

In Applied Behavior Analysis, understanding what happens before and after a behavior can help identify the need it may be serving.

Four commonly discussed functions are:

🔹 Attention: Seeking interaction or a response
🔹 Escape: Avoiding or ending a difficult demand or situation
🔹 Tangible: Gaining access to an item or activity
🔹 Automatic: Meeting an internal or sensory need

Once the likely function is understood, children can be taught safer, more effective ways to communicate the same need. 🧩

Behavior is not always random. Looking beyond what happened to understand why it happened can guide more meaningful support.

When Everyday Tasks Feel Extra Challenging.

Occupational therapy can support children when sensory, motor, emotional, or daily living challenges begin affecting their participation at home, school, or play. ✨

Some signs to notice include:

🔹 Avoiding certain textures, clothing, or messy play
🔹 Difficulty dressing, feeding, grooming, or toileting
🔹 Challenges with balance and coordination
🔹 Struggling with pencils, scissors, buttons, or small objects
🔹 Frequent overwhelm or difficulty regulating emotions

These signs do not automatically mean a child needs therapy. However, when challenges are persistent or interfere with everyday routines, an OT evaluation can help families understand what support may be beneficial. 💛

Little Hands Can Say So Much.

Before spoken words fully develop, gestures can give babies and toddlers a meaningful way to communicate. 👋💬

Simple signs such as “more,” “eat,” “help,” “all done,” and “milk” can help children express their needs, participate in everyday routines, and experience less frustration.

Try using one or two gestures consistently, say the word aloud, and celebrate every attempt to communicate. Keep it simple, playful, and pressure-free. 💛

ABA Therapy Is About Building Meaningful Skills

Applied Behavior Analysis can help children develop practical skills that support greater participation and independence in everyday life. 🧩

Depending on each child’s individual strengths and needs, therapy may focus on:

✨ Communication and social interaction
✨ Attention and learning readiness
✨ Emotional regulation and coping skills
✨ Positive behavior support
✨ Academic and daily living skills

ABA should never be one-size-fits-all. Goals should be personalized, measurable, and meaningful to the child and their family.

Autism does not look the same in every person. The spectrum is not a straight line from “less autistic” to “more autistic.” It reflects a unique combination of strengths, challenges, preferences, and support needs.

One child may speak fluently but need significant sensory support. Another may communicate using AAC while showing strong skills in other areas. Support needs can also change across environments and from one day to another.

Understanding autism begins when we stop expecting one specific presentation and start listening to the individual. 💛

A thoughtfully designed sensory OT room gives children opportunities to move, explore, regulate, and build important skills through purposeful play.

Swings, crash mats, therapy balls, balance boards, tunnels, and tactile activities may support:

✨ Attention and self-regulation
✨ Balance and coordination
✨ Body awareness
✨ Strength and motor planning
✨ Sensory processing

Children with autism, ADHD, sensory processing differences, or developmental delays may benefit from activities selected for their individual needs and comfort.

Which item would you love to include in a sensory room? 💬

A Speech Delay Does Not Automatically Mean Autism.

Speech and language differences are common among autistic children, but delayed speech alone is not enough to identify autism.

Autism involves broader developmental patterns, including differences in social communication and interaction, along with restricted or repetitive behaviors or interests. Speech delays may also be related to a speech-language disorder, hearing differences, or other developmental factors.

If you have concerns, speak with your child’s pediatrician and ask about developmental screening and a speech-language evaluation. Early evaluation is about gaining understanding and finding the right support, not placing a label. 💛

8 Ways to Support the Vestibular System 🌀

The vestibular system helps children understand movement, balance and where their bodies are in space.

Movement activities may help some children feel calm and organized, while others may become more alert or overwhelmed. The response depends on the child and the type of movement.

Try:

1️⃣ Gentle swinging
2️⃣ Sliding
3️⃣ Slow rocking
4️⃣ Balancing
5️⃣ Rolling on a mat
6️⃣ Jumping
7️⃣ Supervised upside-down play
8️⃣ Brief, child-led spinning

Start slowly, follow the child’s cues and never force movement. Stop if they become dizzy, pale, nauseated, distressed or unusually unsteady.

For children with sensory processing differences, a pediatric OT can help identify which types of movement are supportive and create an individualized plan. 💛
