Language evolves as science evolves.

You'll still hear the term "behavior modification" used in older textbooks, university courses, and even some state regulations. It isn't a "wrong" term, it reflects an earlier era in the development of our field.

Today, however, many behavior analysts have intentionally shifted toward terms like "behavior analysis" and "behavior support".

Why?

Because it's more than a change in terminology, it reflects a change in how we think about helping people.

Instead of asking:

❓ "How do we change this behavior?"

we're more likely to ask:

💜 "Why is this behavior happening, and what skills, supports, or environmental changes will help this person succeed?"

The words we use matter because they communicate our philosophy. Our goal isn't simply to modify behavior, it's to understand people and help build the conditions in which they can be successful.

I'd love to hear from others in human services. Have you noticed this shift in language over the years?
