Edited to add: I think my words have been misunderstood in some ways. I AM saying that we all ultimately heal ourselves. I am NOT saying that I or you or anyone else directly heals another. I do mean that we facilitate another to heal themselves. I think we are pretty much all in agreement on that important thing. Where I disagree is that I think it is because of this that it is perfectly acceptable to be called a healer. (One who facilitates healing). Clients seek you out because they have a problem that needs healing. Calling oneself a practitioner is perfectly acceptable in most places, but in some areas it can imply a specific state issued license that doesn’t exist and so I avoid that term for myself. But I do think it is appropriate as a descriptive title. In the same way that I have hypnotherapy certification but in my state I cannot use the term hypnotherapist or provide hypnotherapy without also being a licensed psychologist. (crazy). So the terms have to be adjusted. From what I am ready we are all in basic agreement of what we provide and even how we provide it. I am very grateful for how much discussion has come from this post! (my original intent). To me a healer is a wide umbrella that includes much more than sound and energy healing. It is also big pharma, eastern and western medicine traditions, etc. Anything that facilitates healing is done with the aid of a healer.
I’ve seen quite a few people out there on the internet, stating that we should not call ourselves healers and that we aren’t really healers. Some say we only help a person to heal themselves that it isn’t by us directly and so we aren’t healers. I disagree. Here’s why.
Here’s why you SHOULD call yourself a healer.
You are a healer when your intentions and actions match.
When your intention is to help someone to heal, and your actions taken are of the same mind, you are a healer.
First lets remember that doctors don’t heal us. In fact they work less directly than we do. They work with medicines (pharmaceuticals usually) to help us heal ourselves. Even massage, while being very hands on, is still about giving our body what it needs to heal itself. We still consider them healers.
So whether you are offering a bandage, a sugery, a medicine, an ear to talk to, a comfort, a sound, or an energy with the intention to heal, you are a healer.
All require a person to achieve healing through participation. Even after surgery a person is required to heal, not be healed. A therapist will guide your mind with voice or medication. Some guide you to healing through sound, vibration, and energy. Regardless of the modality… We ARE healers.
