Returning to the past while holding onto the present is something I’ve been working within lately.

If you peruse my shop (It’s live! After a year!), you’ll notice some changes but also some old familiars. I wanted to return to some of my favored soaps from years past while also adding a few newbies. There is comfort to be found in old work made new again.

You will also notice my inventory isn’t as big or robust as in previous drops. With all the crazy life stuff we’ve been experiencing, it was necessary to be more selective with my energy and resources. The good news is that I’ve left plenty of inspiration in my imagination satchel for next year!

As always, thank you for waiting. Thank you for your support. Thank you for your friendship. I could not make this art without you.

(Also I really miss .co taking pretty pictures of my soap. 🥹)

M I N T

John Parkinson, in his, Garden of Pleasure, 1629, mentions:

‘divers sorts of mintes both of the garden and wilde, of the woods, mountain and standing pools of waters’ and says: ‘Mintes are sometimes used in Baths with Balm and other herbs as a help to comfort and strengthen the nerves and sinews. It is much used either outwardly applied or inwardly drunk to strengthen and comfort weak stomackes.’

Westmacott, published in 1694, mentions various mints and states that they are well known to:

‘the young Botanists and Herb Women belonging to Apothecarys’ shops. ... In the shops are 1. The dry Herbs. 2ndly. Mint Water. 3rdly. Spirit of Mints. 4th. Syrup of Mints. 5th. The Conserve of the Leaves.

Mint has a long, historied use in both medicinal and folkloric capacities. The perfect inspiration for a bar of soap.

You can find a simple bar that has been infused with mint leaves and colored with indigo powder as part of my Austere collection, available until tomorrow (December 15th) evening.

From Banckes’ Herbal, 1552:

‘Take the flowers thereof and make powder thereof and binde it so the right arme in a linnen cloath and it shale make thee light and merrie.
‘Take the flowers and put them in thy chest among thy clothes or among thy books and moths shall not destroy them.

‘Also put the leaves under thy bedde and thou shalt be delivered of all evill dreames.
‘Also if thou be feeble boyle the leaves in cleane water and washe thyself and thou shalt wax shiny.

The Ancients were well-versed in the uses of rosemary, a herb renowned for its ability to strengthen memory. This association made it a symbol of fidelity among couples. Rosemary has always held a unique place in tradition due to its rich symbolism.

It was not only used in weddings but also at funerals, to adorn churches and banquet halls during festivals, as incense in religious rites, and even in magical rituals. At weddings, brides wore rosemary entwined in their wreaths, often after it had been dipped in scented water. Guests received gilded rosemary branches tied with colorful silk ribbons as tokens of love and loyalty.

You can find a simple bar of soap that has been infused with fresh rosemary sprigs and colored with earthy clay as part of my Austere collection, available now.

Austere is live, my friends.

The inspiration behind this collection came from noticing how everything in winter breaks back down into its simplest form. Its essence. Awaiting to be reborn again in a few months.

This collection of soaps focuses on one scent profile, with one unique ingredient, and one botanical color. They are scented subtly so as to not take focus from their core value which is to cleanse.

For as the cold, stark winter cleanses the lands, so too will this soap. Allowing us to once more, begin again.

Stay tuned as I drop snippets and inspo for these bars in the coming days.

Happy lathering.

Reishi & Sandalwood.

Reishi have been known to restore strength to the weak, calm the restless, and ease the pain of those who suffer. It is said that those who understand reishi can unlock a life of balance and peace.

Reishi mushrooms (Ganoderma lucidum) are known for their incredible properties and have been used for hundreds of years in folk medicine. Reishi is often revered as the “Mushroom of Immortality,” for its potent antioxidant properties as well as its ability to support immune function, reduce stress, and improve overall well being.

Harvesting reishi mushrooms involves careful timing and techniques to ensure the mushrooms retain their beneficial properties. Reishi grows primarily on decaying hardwoods, such as oak, maple, and hemlock. It can be found in the wild or cultivated on logs. Wild harvesting typically occurs in late summer to early fall when the mushrooms are mature.

And while we can’t promise this soap will improve your health, it can offer you a lovely little bridge between the human world and the sacred energy of nature.

Aromatic notes of bergamot, mushroom, oakmoss, sweet sandalwood, and vanilla creme.

Maple & Grapefruit.

Every spring, the Maple felt a gentle pressure building within her roots, as the frozen ground began to thaw and the sap inside her stirred awake.

She was always excited when the people came, knowing they appreciated the sweetness she had nurtured through long, cold winters and warm, sunlit summers.

Year after year, the process continued and the people came, and though she gave much, she never felt depleted.

This soap was crafted using sustainably harvested maple syrup from the Passamaquoddy Tribe in Peskotomuhkatikuk (Maine/Canada). Aromatic notes of maple, pecan, cacao, and hints of grapefruit.

(Indigenous peoples living in northeastern North America were the first groups known to have produced maple syrup and maple sugar. It is important to acknowledge the original peoples who still harvest this liquid gold.)

Smokey Quartz.

While she may be sweet, she is also fiery, risen up from the charcoal and smoke.

This bar was inspired by chilled evenings spent in a dark forest huddled ‘round a roaring campfire, indulging in sugary-roasted confections, narrating stories time has long forgotten.

She is colored with swirls of charcoal, cocoa, and clay. Aromatic notes of cedarwood, sandalwood, campfire, marshmallow, whiskey barrel, and amber. Topped with smokey quartz point.

Apple Seed & Sage.

Once, in a small village nestled between hills, there was an apple tree that stood tall and proud. It had weathered many seasons, bearing fruit for generations. One autumn day, a tiny apple fell from its branches, rolling away until it rested at the edge of a quiet stream. Inside the apple was a single seed, small and unassuming, but filled with potential.

The apple eventually rotted away, but the seed remained, cradled by the soil. Days turned into weeks, and the seed waited. Winter came, blanketing the land in cold silence, and the seed felt the frost in its core. It slept beneath the earth, dreaming of the sun, of the sky it had never seen.

When spring arrived, the seed felt a gentle warmth from above. The rains nourished the soil, and with a quiet determination, it began to stir. Slowly, it sent out tiny roots, reaching downward, and a delicate sprout, reaching upward. It broke through the earth and stretched towards the sun, its first taste of light filling it with energy.

Years passed, and the sprout grew into a young sapling, then a strong tree. The villagers admired it, but none knew the humble beginnings of the mighty tree that now provided shade and fruit. Birds nested in its branches, children played beneath it, and every autumn, apples fell from its limbs, each containing a seed with the same quiet potential, waiting for its own chance to grow.

And so, the cycle continued, a story of patience, perseverance, and the quiet strength that lies within the smallest of things.

This soap was crafted with magical apple seed oil and freshly pressed apples. Colored naturally with clays. Aromatic notes of red apple, coconut cream, sage, and almond.

Find this and other goodies when the shop reopens on Tuesday, October 8th.

Birch Bark & Fir.

Not so long ago, two of our beloved birch trees were felled as a result of ageing and a massive windstorm. Beyond our grief, we set about finding a way to preserve their beautiful, yet departing essence.

Birch medicine is widely used among folk herbalists and highly regarded for its beneficial properties. This unique soap was crafted using birch bark infusions from our trees.

Aromatic notes of scotch pine, fir needle, sweet orange, cinnamon and patchouli.

Find this and other treats when the shop reopens on October 8th.

Chaga & Vetiver

Chaga thrives in harsh, northern boreal forests. They are tolerant, slow with growth, and exceptionally resilient.

This soap was crafted with these qualities in mind; can we not adopt some of chaga’s attributes into ourselves?

This soap is exfoliating (thanks to chaga) and has aromatic notes of fir needle, vetiver, cherry cordial, ozone, double extracted mushrooms.

Find this bar plus other new and old favorite soaps when the shop reopens October 8th.
