Many of us know the need to stay hydrated during the summer and are in the habit of grabbing a water bottle when we run out the door. But are you aware that the heat of summer can create dangerous chemical leaching in certain water bottles?

Keeping your water bottle sitting in even just a warm car or in direct sun outside can raise the temperature enough to promote microplastic shedding and leaching of dangerous chemicals like VOCs, BPA, and phthalates. Putting that same water bottle in a hot car or in the dishwasher raises the risk substantially.

To prevent this, drink from water bottles made of glass, high quality stainless steel, or Tritan plastic. Try to avoid single use plastic water bottles. If you must use them be very careful about keeping them cool and discard any water that has gotten too warm.

With each season our nutritional needs change. In the summer we need to prioritize heightened hydration and electrolyte replacement. We also need to fill our diet full of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants to help repair skin from sun damage and support the immune system. To avoid slow digestion and further dehydration we need to limit eating greasy foods and excessive sugar and alcohol. Seasonal and local produce, protein, probiotics, and healthy fats should be the nutritional focus for the summer!

Our schedules are also always in flux and it’s easy to resort to quick, packaged foods. Planning so that you have a game plan for summer snacks will help reduce the environmental impact of single use plastics and provide your body with solid nutrition so you can have the energy you need for summer fun! Try setting aside 1 day a week to plan and prep snacks for the week.

Here are some ideas to get you started!

1. Hydrating snacks like watermelon/mozzarella/basil kabobs. Also, quick and easy hydrating vegetables like cucumbers, celery, and bell peppers or fruits like blueberries, oranges, pineapple, and peaches.

2. Snacks rich in probiotics like kefir smoothies or homemade yogurt popsicles.

3. Homemade granola bars, energy balls, homemade trail mix and fruit leather full of seeds, nut butters, nuts and fruit for energy and protein!

4. Foods high in sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium to replenish the electrolytes you lose when sweating: avocados, bananas, oranges, spinach, tomatoes, salmon and sweet potatoes.

Dealing with bugs is an inevitable part of summer. The great news is that there are so many natural solutions that really work in reducing bugs and in relief after bites!

To prevent bugs:

1. Look for sprays with essential oils like lemon, eucalyptus, lemongrass, and tea tree oil.

2. Use candles or other products with citronella stationed around where you are hanging out!

3. Encourage natural predators of bugs like bats and birds with bat houses and bird feeders!

When those pesky bugs do get through and you are dealing with irritation and redness, here are some natural remedies to try to bring relief and healing:

1. Aloe Vera

2. Apple Cider Vinegar

3. Cold Compress

4. Itch creams or balms with essential oils like lavender, mint, patchouli, turmeric, and rose.

Here are some products we carry to help you enjoy the great outdoors more comfortably this summer!

Did you know that there are benefits to rotating what types of omega-3 oils you take? As the weather changes and we enjoy more sun our body’s can benefit from taking oils derived from smaller fish like herring, mackerel and sardines. Cod is a great go-to for winter as it is higher in vitamin D but these smaller fish have different and equally beneficial nutrient profiles! Mixing it up provides dietary variation and prevents nutrient imbalance or deficiencies. We have a variety of high quality omega-3 supplements and can help you decide what type of switch might be best for you right now!
