Many of us know the need to stay hydrated during the summer and are in the habit of grabbing a water bottle when we run out the door. But are you aware that the heat of summer can create dangerous chemical leaching in certain water bottles?
Keeping your water bottle sitting in even just a warm car or in direct sun outside can raise the temperature enough to promote microplastic shedding and leaching of dangerous chemicals like VOCs, BPA, and phthalates. Putting that same water bottle in a hot car or in the dishwasher raises the risk substantially.
To prevent this, drink from water bottles made of glass, high quality stainless steel, or Tritan plastic. Try to avoid single use plastic water bottles. If you must use them be very careful about keeping them cool and discard any water that has gotten too warm.
Here’s to toxin-free hydration this summer!
