HPCC Certificant Spotlight!

Meet Andria Caton, MSN, RN, OCN, CHPN® an Assistant Nurse Manager, Oncology Services at Northeast Georgia Medical Center and a proud CHPN®. Andria was recently featured in the article "Enhancing Lung Cancer Screening Utilization in Rural Communities: What Oncology Nurses Should Know."

When asked about the personal and professional impact of HPCC certification, Andria shared:

"When I began working on an oncology unit that also served people in hospice in 2002, I realized that I needed to take an extra step to validate my knowledge and skills through obtaining the CHPN® certification. As I have continued to care for people with cancer and other life limiting conditions, maintaining my CHPN® certification since 2004 has been essential in helping me to keep current on supportive care strategies to provide safe and expert care to the people I serve.

Additionally, when educating novice oncology nurses and resident nurses in our organization, my CHPN® certification has provided a strong foundation to share evidence-based interventions with nurses who are new to end of life and supportive care.

Personally, my CHPN® certification was instrumental in helping to develop and achieve my Master's degree capstone project in 2019, where I studied the impact of advance care planning on patient care staff who cared for people at the end of life."

Meet HPCC's June Certificant of the Month: Sharon White, BSN, RN, CHPN®

Sharon shared how certification has made an impact—both personally and professionally—saying "Hospice is about guiding people through some of the hardest moments of their lives, and the CHPN® has reinforced that I have the expertise to do that well. It also supports my role as an educator, helping me teach others how to approach care that often goes against what people think is “common sense,” but is truly best for the patient. It was worth it because it didn’t just add letters behind my name, it made me better at what I do."

Sharon is currently a Hospice Clinical Education Specialist at ExcelaCare, Magnolia Hospice.
