I’ve come to find counter pressure to be an incredibly helpful tool when supporting women through the more intense parts of labor, especially during unmedicated births.

Counter pressure uses firm, steady touch on areas like the lower back, hips, or sacrum during contractions. Many women find that it helps reduce discomfort, release tension, and feel more grounded during labor.

It is also a great way to involve partners and support people by giving them a clear, hands-on way to offer comfort and reassurance. Support in labor does not have to be complicated to be effective.

Every labor is different, but having simple, responsive tools like counter pressure can make a meaningful difference in how supported and confident a mother feels during birth.

Can you eat and drink during labor? Here’s what the evidence says 👇

Many hospitals still follow “NPO” (nothing by mouth) policies during labor. However, research reviewed by Evidence Based Birth® (EBB) shows there is no strong evidence that eating or drinking during labor increases harm for most low-risk births.

Labor is physically demanding, and fueling your body with fluids and light, easily digestible foods can support energy, hydration, comfort, and overall satisfaction.

According to Evidence Based Birth®, decisions about eating and drinking in labor should be individualized, taking into account risk factors, care setting, and personal preferences.

As your doula, I am there to advocate for your preferences and educate you on your options as able, while you work with your medical provider to make the decision that best suits your needs.

I received this review from a family I supported, and it truly means so much to me. Walking alongside families during pregnancy and birth is deeply meaningful work, and my hope is always to support and empower everyone involved - parents, siblings, and the whole family as they welcome new life.

It’s an honor to be trusted in such a tender season, and I’m so grateful for each opportunity to offer steady, compassionate, evidence-based care.

As the days get colder, I’ve been leaning into all things warm and comforting. ❄️✨

Whether you’re pregnant, postpartum, or just moving through a busy season, those small moments of calm matter.

If you are pregnant, finding ways to relax can be extra helpful - especially as you near birth. Cozy, comforting moments can support your body in releasing oxytocin, the “love and connection” hormone that plays an important role in the birthing process.

What helps you relax this time of year?

As your doula, my hope is to use the tools in my doula bag to create a calming, supportive environment to help your body feel safe, grounded, and encouraged throughout labor.

These tools include:

• Birth combs - great for acupressure and grounding through contractions
• Heating pad - helps ease back tension and encourage relaxation
• Birth book - full of affirmations, positioning ideas, and helpful information
• Sports gel - a quick way to fuel your body when labor gets intense
• Massage oil - for pain relief and comfort during contractions
• Birth plan - a clear guide to help your care team honor your preferences
• String lights - to create a relaxed atmosphere that supports oxytocin production

Early labor is all about preparation.
During this stage, your body is easing into the rhythm of birth. Most families spend this time at home, as contractions are still spaced out. This is a great window to focus on gentle movement like walking, stretching, and hip circles. It's also important to stay nourished with balanced snacks and meals so you’re well-fueled when it’s time to head to the hospital ✨

I offer 24/7 phone call and text support to my clients while they are in early labor, so they always have someone to support and encourage them through this stage 🤗

If you’re expecting in 2026 and are hoping for steady, compassionate support through pregnancy and birth, I’d love to connect. I serve families along the I-95 corridor from Richmond to Stafford, Virginia, offering continuous, personalized birth doula care.

Each family I work with receives dedicated attention, so space is limited throughout the year. If you’re curious about what working together might look like, reach out for a free consultation or message me directly. I’d be honored to support you.

Semi-recumbent positions are a variation of lying-down positions that offer more flexibility during labor. They allow for rest and monitoring, especially useful when you're in a hospital bed, and still provide opportunities to open the pelvis and incorporate movement into your birth.

These positions can be especially helpful if you’re using an epidural, particularly a low-dose option that allows for some mobility. Adjusting your angle, using peanut balls, or shifting your legs can help keep labor progressing while you stay supported.

Movement doesn’t have to stop just because you're in bed. Small adjustments can make a big impact on the length and experience of your birth.

Recumbent positions where you’re lying down during labor or birth can offer moments of rest, especially when you’ve already used upright or active positions to help your baby descend.

But while rest can be valuable, especially during long labors, it’s important to know that lying flat or semi-reclined can limit your baby’s movement into the birth canal and reduce the space in your pelvis.

In the U.S., many providers are primarily trained in delivering babies in recumbent positions, and this often leads to discouragement, or even prohibition, of other evidence-based positions.

You have options. Learning about different positions and how they affect labor can help you feel more confident advocating for what works best for you.
