Not everything is carpal tunnel. Let's see how a PT actually thinks.
Someone sits down, holds up their hand, and says the words: "I've got carpal tunnel." Google agreed. The neighbor agreed. The $18 wrist brace from Amazon definitely agreed.
The therapist nods politely — and quietly starts working through a list:
Cubital tunnel — nerve compressed at the elbow, not the wrist
Cervical spine — C6/C7 nerve root referring down the arm
Thoracic outlet — compression up near the shoulder and collarbone
Carpal tunnel — the wrist itself
Numb fingers can come from four different places. Which fingers are involved, and when the symptoms show up, is what points us toward the right one.
Treat the wrong site and someone can spend months in a wrist brace for something that started at the elbow. It happens more than you'd think.
That's why we test before we treat.
Numbness, tingling, or weakness in the hands is worth having properly evaluated rather than guessed at.
