Living With Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) 👁️💙
Retinitis pigmentosa is a group of inherited eye conditions that can cause gradual vision loss over time. Early symptoms may include difficulty seeing at night or reduced peripheral (side) vision.
While RP can bring challenges, people living with vision loss can learn new strategies, use helpful technology, and continue doing many of the activities they enjoy.
✨ Vision may change, but independence is still possible. Support, training, and the right resources can make a meaningful difference.

Sports are a great way to stay active, but eye injuries can happen in an instant. Balls, elbows, sticks, and other equipment can cause serious eye damage—even during recreational play.
🛡️ Protect your vision: • Wear sport-appropriate protective eyewear • Make sure protective gear fits properly • Follow safety rules and use equipment correctly • Never ignore eye pain, vision changes, or an eye injury

As Children's Eye Health and Safety Month comes to a close, remember that healthy vision begins with awareness and regular eye care. And for those already living with vision loss, there is always hope. With training, technology, and a supportive community, people can continue to live active, meaningful, and independent lives.

Myth: People who are blind live in complete darkness. Fact: Blindness is different for everyone. Many people have some usable vision, such as light perception, central vision, or peripheral vision. Every person's experience is unique, so it's important not to make assumptions.

Living with vision loss is easier when you have people who understand your journey. Support groups, peer mentors, and community organizations provide encouragement, practical tips, and lasting friendships. No one should have to navigate vision loss alone.

Service Dog vs. ESA vs. Therapy Dog — Know the Difference

These three terms are often used interchangeably, but they are not the same thing.

Service Dog: Individually trained to perform specific disability-related work or tasks for their handler. Qualified service dogs have public access rights under the ADA.

ESA — Emotional Support Animal: Provides emotional comfort through their presence. An ESA does not need task training and does not have the same public-access rights as a service dog under the ADA.

Therapy Dog: Works with a handler to provide comfort and companionship to other people, often in places such as hospitals, schools, nursing homes, and hospice facilities. Therapy dogs do not have automatic ADA public access.

The most important thing to remember: A vest, certification, registration, or well-behaved dog does not make an animal a service dog. What matters under the ADA is whether the dog is individually trained to perform work or tasks directly related to a person's disability.

Know the difference. Respect the role. Protect the integrity of service dogs.

These tools help people with vision loss stay connected and independent. Sometimes the best assistive technology is already in your pocket.

White canes are tools of independence—not signs of weakness. They help people detect obstacles, find landmarks, and travel safely. If you see someone using a white cane, give them space to move safely and never grab them without asking first. Respect and awareness help everyone.

Losing vision can feel overwhelming, but you don't have to face it alone. Many people discover they can still cook, travel, work, manage finances, and enjoy their favorite activities with the right training. Independence is learned one skill at a time, and every small success builds confidence.

Technology has opened doors for people with vision loss. Screen readers, magnifiers, smart phones, voice assistants, and AI tools help people read mail, shop, travel, and stay connected. The right technology can turn frustration into independence. Learning new skills is never too late.
