Happy Registered Dietitian Day!

Today we’re celebrating our very own dietitian, Kerry Lett, MPH, RDN, LDN, CLC.

Kerry is a registered dietitian who specializes in maternal and pediatric nutrition. Through her work, she helps families navigate feeding themselves and their family through every milestone from fertility through pregnancy and infancy through childhood.

We’re so grateful for the knowledge, care, and dedication she brings to every family she works with.

Happy IBCLC Day!

Today we are so excited to celebrate our International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) and the amazing work they do!

IBCLCs are the highest level of trained breastfeeding and chestfeeding professionals. They not only help with latch and positioning, they also support families through:
✨ feeding challenges
✨ milk supply concerns
✨ pumping and returning to work
✨ tongue ties and oral function
✨ infant weight gain
✨ maternal health and comfort
✨ emotional support and confidence

Breastfeeding can be beautiful, but at times it can also be really hard. Having an IBCLC means having trusted, evidence-based team member in your corner when things don’t go as planned.

Most prenatal vitamins will list the “Percent Daily Value” on the supplement facts label and you may have looked at this and felt reassured when you scanned and saw that your prenatal vitamin meets 100% of your daily value. However, most prenatal vitamins are less comprehensive than they may seem and the Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) and Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs) used to establish these percentages can be misleading.

It is important to keep in mind that the RDAs were designed to answer a very specific question: “What is the minimum amount of a nutrient needed to prevent deficiency in most people?” They are not designed to define optimal intake or support nutrient repletion for ideal nutrition. Even more importantly, pregnant and breastfeeding women were excluded from 83% of the studies used to establish current DRIs and RDAs. As a result, many standards still rely on research primarily conducted on white men with an incremental value added to account for pregnancy and lactation. This approach assumes maternal needs increase only modestly, which may significantly understate the true requirements. In fact, multiple research studies suggest that maternal needs for certain nutrients may be three to even ten times higher than the current pregnancy RDAs.
