"Increasing organ donation in minority communities is not just about numbers – it's about saving lives and giving hope to families." –Dr. Velma Scantlebury, the first African American female transplant surgeon.

On June 19, we recognize Juneteenth, honoring the day in 1865 when freedom finally reached the last enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas. This day is both a celebration of resilience and a call to action.

We stand in solidarity with efforts to eliminate disparities in donation and transplantation. Black Americans make up 13% of the U.S. population, and account for 27% of those waiting for an organ transplant in the U.S. Your decision to register as a donor can help save lives and bring hope to those waiting for a lifesaving transplant. This Juneteenth, join us in reflecting, uplifting, and recommitting to a future where every life has an equal chance.

"It's not just a checkbox at the DMV when they ask when you renew your license. It's actually very important," Mariah, 2-month-old Sadie's mom, said.

Gaston County's Sadie is now recovering after making medical history as the youngest patient to ever receive a liver transplant at a hospital in Pittsburgh.

Her family opened up to WCNC Charlotte about their urgent need for a transplant and her recovery. To watch the whole story, head to WCNC.com.

Your donation status does *not* affect medical care.

Your life always comes first. Doctors work hard to save every patient’s life, but sometimes there is a complete and permanent loss of brain function. The patient is declared clinically and legally dead. Only then is donation an option.

It is important to know that the hospital care team does not know the patient’s donor status. The hospital contacts the local organ procurement organization (OPO), which evaluates the individual’s medical history and checks the donor registry. If the person is registered, the OPO will inform and support the family. If not, the family will be asked if they would like to authorize donation. For all organ, eye, and tissue donation, the donor is treated with care and respect, and the donor family is supported throughout the donation process.

In a few months, Kevin, Nalisa, and their daughter, Stori, will be heading off to Disney World, and Kevin will celebrate one year into his second chance at life. This will be the first vacation the family has been able to take in a long time. That's because up until Kevin's kidney transplant, his family's life revolved around his dialysis treatments.

In 2023, Kevin was diagnosed with end-stage renal failure and would eventually need treatment up to 20 hours a week. Stori was his big helper, checking for bruises on his body and working any of the dozens of buttons required to run the machines. On weekend nights, when Stori could stay up past her usual bedtime, dialysis time became bonding time.

Kevin was eventually placed on the national transplant waiting list, and friends and family underwent testing to potentially become his living donor. Nalisa's sister, Shaneé, shared Kevin's rare blood type and was a match!

In July 2025, Kevin and Shaneé underwent successful surgeries at VCU Health Hume-Lee Transplant Center.

"I’m living proof that living-donor transplants not only saved my life, but my family’s lives as well. I’m definitely going to make sure I do everything that I need to do to keep myself healthy so I can be around here for another 40 or 50 years. I have way too much to live for.”

You can make a difference for a family like Kevin's! Register today at DonateLifeNC.org to become a lifesaver 🛟💙

Did you know? Anyone can register to be a donor regardless of age, race, or medical history!

Don't count yourself out. Medical professionals determine donation eligibility at the time of donation, not when you register.

Register your decision today and help give hope to those waiting for a second chance at life.

"Here we are in 2026...I am able to see another birthday. I am forever grateful to my donor, my 'Organ Buddy.' We have gotten so close through this whole process. It seems were more like family. It has also made me look at life through a different lens. The transplant process puts into perspective what matters, what doesn't, what's in your control, and what needs to be released."

Tiffany was diagnosed with a rare liver disease in high school that progressed in severity over the years until her medical team suggested that a living liver transplant was her best option. Tiffany posted her story on social media, and a family friend, Nora, messaged to say she was interested in being evaluated as a living donor. They were a match! In September of 2025, Tiffany and Nora had their surgeries and, today, are doing well. 💙💚
