Come see me at Pybus on July 11 after you buy some goodies at the farmer’s market! This event is such a great way to connect with all the support options in the valley during the childbearing years, whether it’s your first or fifth baby. Hope to see many of you there!

I was brewing up a batch of Laborade for my upcoming doula client and I made some tweaks here and there to my much loved recipe. No recipe gatekeeping here - check it out! If you want your uterus to function optimally and not feel completely depleted after birth, hydration is one of the most important factors. Munching on ice chips and drinking some juice won’t cut it.

And what about an IV? In situations where you are unable to drink enough in labor, or you’ve vomited multiple times and can’t keep liquids down, and IV can be an awesome way to hydrate. But oral hydration is superior as it won’t over-fill your bladder or increase you and baby’s swelling. Yes, too much IV fluid can cause swelling in the baby, making their birth weight inaccurate.

Laborade shouldn’t be the only thing you consume in labor - bring a lot of options. Coconut water, LMNT packs, Redmond Re-Lyte, juices. You never know what will sound good to you when the time comes. This Laborade can be made ahead of time and frozen in jars or ice cube trays. Or simply make it every few days to stay ultra hydrated before labor even starts. This would also make an awesome postpartum drink for lactation replenishment.

Mixing up a postpartum herbal tea blend for my upcoming doula clients. Did you use herbs as medicine in your postpartum time? I feel that herbal medicine was a huge part of my two very nourished early postpartum experiences.

There are many ways to use herbs as medicine, but I think tea is the most approachable and easiest. I was able to grow many of these herbs in my garden and I can’t wait to share them with a few new mothers in the coming months.

This week I attended a birth for one my class clients. It was a beautiful unmedicated hospital birth for a first time mom. I have been feeling the call to attend births in some capacity for awhile now, and afterwards I was trying to explain to my husband how good it felt.

I told him it was hard work but not difficult, natural, and just made me feel so good. What was this feeling? He said, “honey it’s called feeling fulfilled. This is your life’s passion.” I had forgotten, I guess!

It felt so good that I’ve decided to offer more doula births. But I need back up because my availability is not 24/7, so I’m partnering with Delaney .doula in the form of a doula collective. This is a model where we attend births together primarily but also can offer individual birth support.

Looking forward to sinking into this role and retuning to the birth world in this way.

I attended a birth (for the first time in 3 years, but more on that later) and my client thought of the best birth set up I’ve ever seen for our local hospital. They used a Thai massage pad on the floor with a waterproof cover, and their own comfy pillows and blankets from home. But you could use any kind of blowup or roll up mattress.

This was an absolute game changer to allow for freedom of movement and to decrease the feeling of being medicalized. My client took a deeply relaxed, much-needed nap on it, confirming what I teach in my class which is that if you are well supported, you can actually be snoring (literally) asleep in between contractions.

I’m going to recommend this for hospital births from here on out! Anyone else ever seen something like this?

Think outside the pouch. My daughter Remy is ready for solids so we chose foods from our garden to be her firsts: cucumber, tomato, peach, and ribeye steak (ok, not from our garden, but fresh and good nonetheless). My Babyled Weaning class is so so good - and here I am practicing what I preach. Class coming up, Sept 18.

My postpartum classes weren’t set to start until August, but I just had my first group birth class since returning from maternity leave and the group loved the class and wanted to see if they could get a postpartum class on the books. Here it is if anyone else would like to join! Amazing for July, August, and September due dates.
