The Eden Health District hosted its first Youth Mental Health Summit at Chabot College on May 9. The event was a collaboration between the District and Crisis Support Services of Alameda County, as well as Hayward, San Lorenzo, and Castro Valley school districts. The summit had three goals: to increase awareness of mental health topics impacting students, introduce tools that build resilience, and expose students to career pathways in the mental health field.
The day included nine sessions by six different community-based organizations covering topics such as bullying, substance use, and anxiety and depression. There were also sessions that engaged youth in movement, music, and art as a way to intentionally cope with stress. The event concluded with a career panel featuring five speakers working in a range of roles within the mental health field who answered questions about their path, and what drew them to the field. Included are pictures of our board members Mariellen Faria, Ed Hernandez, and Sabrina Aranda and Semaj White, Senior Director of Programs at Beats, Rhyme and Life, giving a talk.
