Sunscreen 411
Let’s break down some FAQs about sunscreen & some sun safety tips!
What’s the difference between chemical and physical SPF?
Physical sunscreen uses minerals like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide which causes the sun’s rays to deflect off the skin. This creates a physical barrier to protect your skin.
Chemical sunscreen works by absorbing UV rays and through a chemical reaction, it converts those rays into heat which is realized from the body. Common types are avobenzone, octinoxate and oxybenzone.
Unfortunately some chemical sunscreen ingredients have been shown to have a harmful impact on coral reefs. Many have been banned in places like Hawaii and Aruba.
Does it matter if you use spf 15 or 30, and does spf 100 actually do anything?
Fun fact the SPF (sun protection factor) number tells you how long the sun’s UV radiation would take to damage or redden your skin.
SPF 30 is typically the minimum recommended level of protection for most people. As long as you remember to reapply, especially if you’re swimming or doing an activity that would cause you to sweat.
SPF 15 filters about 93% of UVB rays, SPF 30 filters 97%, and SPF 50 filters 98%. SPF 100 blocks 99% of UVB rays, so there’s not much difference between a 30 and 100. Again, as long as you remember to reapply, you’re good to go .
Sun safety tips!!
Just a few reminders on how to enjoy being outside in these warmer months and get some vitamin D safely.
Wear that SPF! Yes, I know I won’t shut up about it, but if you do nothing else for your skin, please please just put the sunscreen on your face and exposed body parts and make sure you REAPPLY IT!
If you’re on a road trip or driving a lot, be sure to also put it on any exposed skin, especially your arms.
If you must be a sun bunny, avoid peak hours of the day when the sun is at its highest and most intense. Usually 11-4, depending on your location. Also, overcast skies don’t mean the sun isn’t up there. Getting burned is still a possibility.
Try to seek out shade. Being in direct sunlight for long hours isn’t ideal. Wearing protective clothing is also always a good idea. Both water and sand are reflective surfaces and can increase the risk of a sunburn.
Don’t forget to use aftercare at home. If you’ve spent all day in the sun, be sure to use a hydrating, gentle cleanser or body wash along with a hydrating serum/gel and moisturizer/lotion. To really occlude that hydration into your face use a sheet mask!
