HEAL Foundation

HEAL Foundation Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) and Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) services for former and current service members and their families.

What is the EAGALA Model? The EAGALA Model provides a standard and structure for providing Equine Assisted Psychotherapy and Equine Assisted Learning sessions. Practicing within a model establishes a foundation of key values and beliefs, and provides a basis of good practice and professionalism. The EAGALA Model provides a framework of practice, but within that framework, there are infinite opport

unities for creativity and adaptability to various therapeutic and facilitating styles. The EAGALA Model
◦ The Team Approach – An Equine Specialist, a Mental Health professional, and horses work together with clients in all EAGALA sessions.
◦ Focus on the ground – No horseback riding is involved. Instead, effective and deliberate techniques are utilized where the horses are metaphors in specific ground-based experiences.
◦ Solution-Oriented – The basis of the EAGALA Model is a belief that all clients have the best solutions for themselves when given the opportunity to discover them. Rather than instructing or directing solutions, we allow our clients to experiment, problem-solve, take risks, employ creativity, and find their own solutions that work best for them.
◦ Code of Ethics – EAGALA has high standards of practice and ethics and an ethics committee and protocol for upholding these standards, ensuring best practices and the highest level of care. Additionally, Equine Specialists and Licensed mental health professionals are mandated to abide by the ethical standards of their own professional associations. The EAGALA Team
◦ The Horse: Horses have many characteristics which lend them to being effective agents of change, including honesty, awareness, and ability with nonverbal communication. The role of the horses in an EAGALA session is to be themselves.
◦ The Equine Specialist (ES): The ES chooses the horses to be used in sessions, works with the MH to structure sessions, keeps an equine log to document horse behaviors in sessions, stays aware of safety and welfare of clients, horses, and team, and makes observations of horse SPUD’s (an EAGALA-developed observation framework taught in the certification training program) which can bring in potential metaphors.
◦ The Mental Health Professional (MH): The MH is responsible for treatment planning, documentation of clients, and ensuring ethical practice. The MH builds on the ES’s horse observations, bringing in the metaphoric and therapeutic/learning relevance of the session.

9/11 is a date forever etched in the American psyche. Today we remember and honor the 2,563 civilians and 441 First Responders who lost their lives 24 years ago and those whose lives were forever changed.

We recognize and honor the more than 48,579 First Responders and clean-up workers who suffer from or have died from 9/11 related cancers and continue to struggle with PTSD and suicidal ideation.

We give thanks to the brave women and men in the US Miliary who have served, sacrificing their lives and well-being in the many years of battle since that date in 2001.

The 6th Annual Henry's HEAL Ride is coming up on September 20th!

This year the ride will end at HEAL with an open house at the farm. If you've wanted to check out the farm this is a great day to do it- no motorcycle needed! All are welcome to join us from 2pm - 4:30pm on the 20th to meet the HEAL team, spend time with the horses and learn more about equine therapy and how our sessions work.

Thank you CVMA Virginia 27-10 who will be providing support during the ride and to for providing food and refreshments!

If you've ever been to the farm you have probably enjoyed a moment of quiet reflection at the fountain generously donated by Curtis King of in Memory of his father, Mark King.

As with any water feature the years have taken their toll and the fountain needed major upgrades and improvements, the cost of which were simply too great to consider.

Curtis and his mother, being the generous people they are once again stepped up to the plate and are donating the labor and materials to install a brand new fountain at the farm - a place of peace and grounding for our Clients, their family and friends.

Thank you for your continued support and for providing us with an additional place of healing at the farm! We can't wait to see the next iteration of this special space you have gifted us.

Thank you again to all of our Sponsors, supporters and golfers for making the 3rd Annual Golfing for our Heroes tournament in honor of MSGT Charles "Cam" Hedrick such a success! We had a beautiful day of joy, golf and community at Bull Run and with a record turn-out came record fundraising! $34,000 was raised from Sponsors and registrants, silent auction and raffle bidders. These funds will go to the continuation of our services and directly to subsidizing the cost of equine facilitated therapy for Veterans, First Responders and their family members. We will never turn away anyone in need of services due to financial constraints and that is because of YOU! We have such gratitude for our supporters- you are all a part of Team HEAL!
