Everything looked fine on the outside…

Even though I have 16 years of experience as a maternal-child health nurse and lactation consultant, both inpatient and outpatient, supporting mothers, newborns, and families during the postpartum period.
I know what it's like to struggle with breastfeeding due to tongue-tie and lip-tie. Because years ago...that struggle consumed me.
I know what it’s like to wake up and think about your kid’s health because of the consequences of a tongue-tie. And to lay down at night thinking about how the tongue-tie was making him a mouth breather, affecting his eating habits, sleep, and behavior. It got so bad that I took him for a sleep study, and we couldn’t sleep all night with him hooked up on all those wires and for a tongue-tie and lip-tie release, and putting him in discomfort during the aftercare exercises every 6 hrs. for 21 days. So, I know how painful it can be. And, I know what it’s like to be on the other side of it.
To have a life where I wake up and I don’t have to be consumed by my son not breathing properly is a relief and joy. The best part is that he didn’t have to have his tonsils removed and go through a risky surgery. And I want this kind of life for all the moms out there who are struggling with breastfeeding due to a tongue-tie! Which is why I do the work that I do.

It had gotten to the point where I was overwhelmed, sleep-deprived, and in pain, struggling to nurse my newborn. I felt discouraged and was on the brink of giving up on breastfeeding. Agree with every word!

Breast milk is the healthiest food on earth… and somehow, saying that out loud has become “controversial.”

But biology is not an insult.

Breast milk is living, changing nutrition made specifically for a human baby. It contains far more than calories. It delivers antibodies, enzymes, hormones, growth factors, human milk oligosaccharides, immune cells, fats, proteins and countless other components that work together in ways a manufactured substitute cannot fully reproduce.

It changes from colostrum to mature milk.
It changes throughout the day.
It changes during a feeding.
It changes as the baby grows.
And when a mother or baby is exposed to illness, the immune protection in her milk changes too.

That is not marketing.

That is human physiology.

Acknowledging the superiority of breast milk does not mean shaming mothers who could not breastfeed, did not have support, had a medical complication, needed supplementation or made a different decision. Mothers deserve compassion. They deserve truthful education. They deserve skilled help before their feeding journey becomes a crisis.

What they do not deserve is watered-down information because the truth might make someone uncomfortable.

We can support formula-feeding families without pretending formula and breast milk are biologically identical.

They are not.

Formula can be necessary, helpful and lifesaving, but it remains a risk and substitute for human milk, not an equivalent copy of it.

Breastfeeding should not be reduced to “just a feeding choice” while mothers are sent home without proper education, denied adequate maternity leave, told pain is normal, given poor pumping guidance and expected to succeed without meaningful support.

The real controversy is not saying breast milk is extraordinary.

The real controversy is knowing how valuable it is, and still refusing to build a society that truly protects a mother’s ability to provide it.

Breast milk is not trendy.
It is not a luxury.
It is not simply “best.”

It is the biological norm.

And I will never apologize for saying that firmly.
