Today, we pause. πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

Memorial Day is more than a long weekend β€” it's a day to honor the courage, sacrifice, and love of those who gave everything so we could live freely.

To every family who has felt that loss β€” we hold you in our hearts today.

At Mountain Roots, healing has always been our purpose. But it starts with remembering what truly matters: the people we love, the lives we protect, and the communities we build together.

Wishing you a meaningful, peaceful, and restorative day.

We're stepping away for the long weekend β€” and we hope you do too. πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

Our office will be closed Saturday, May 23 through Monday, May 25 in honor of Memorial Day. We'll be back, refreshed and ready, on Tuesday, May 26.

This weekend is a reminder that rest is not a luxury β€” it's part of healing. We're grateful for the brave men and women whose sacrifice made this freedom possible, and for the incredible community we get to serve every day.

If you reach out while we're away, we'll respond first thing Tuesday morning.

From our family to yours β€” have a safe, meaningful, and restorative holiday weekend. 🌿

They renamed PCOS. And if you've ever felt dismissed, unheard, or like something was always being missed β€” this one's for you.

PCOS is now officially PMOS.
Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome.
Published in The Lancet. May 12, 2026.

One letter changed in the acronym. The entire meaning shifted.

The old name told you this was an o***y problem. The new name finally admits what many of us have known:

This is a whole-body hormonal and metabolic condition β€” and it has been, all along.

Here's what that means:
β†’ Insulin resistance is a core driver (in 85% of cases β€” even in lean women)
β†’ Your androgens, thyroid, cortisol, and gut are all part of this picture
β†’ The "cysts" were never really cysts β€” they were immature follicles
β†’ Up to 70% of women with this condition are still undiagnosed

And the standard approach of handing you a birth control pill? That manages symptoms. It does not investigate. It does not heal. Root-cause care looks deeper.

At Mountain Roots Holistic Healthcare, our Hormone Optimization Program was built exactly for this β€” a comprehensive, whole-body
approach that investigates the real drivers behind your hormones,
your metabolism, and your energy.

Because you deserve answers that go beyond "your labs look fine."

They renamed PCOS. Here's what that actually means for you:

PCOS is now officially PMOS β€” Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome. Published in The Lancet. May 12, 2026.

One letter changed. The meaning? Completely different. The old name told women this was an o***y problem. The new name finally tells the truth:

This is a hormonal + metabolic condition that affects your entire body β€”
your insulin, your androgens, your metabolism, your skin, your cycles, your mental health.

1 in 8 women has this. Most were never told the full picture.

If you've been managing PCOS and still feel like something's off β€”
it's not in your head. The root cause may have never been fully addressed.

This is what functional medicine has been saying all along. πŸ’›

Your circulatory system has a pump β€” your heart. Your lymphatic system doesn't. It moves only when YOU move.

Lymph is the fluid that surrounds every cell in your body. It carries waste, dead cells, viruses, bacteria, and toxins away from tissues and toward lymph nodes β€” where the immune system filters and processes everything before it gets dumped into the bloodstream and sent to liver and kidneys for final disposal. When lymph stagnates (because you sit all day, don't sweat, are dehydrated, or have chronic inflammation), waste literally pools in your tissues. Symptoms include:
β†’ Puffy face, especially in the morning
β†’ Tender, swollen lymph nodes
β†’ Cellulite (often connected to lymph stagnation) β†’ Skin congestion, breakouts
β†’ Heavy or achy limbs
β†’ Brain fog
β†’ Frequent colds (immune cells live in lymph)

How to move your lymph daily:
βœ“ Walk β€” even 10 minutes
βœ“ Rebound (gently bouncing on a mini trampoline) β€” gold standard
βœ“ Dry brush before showering, always toward the heart
βœ“ Sweat β€” sauna, exercise, sun
βœ“ Deep diaphragmatic breathing (the 'lymph pump' is in your gut)
βœ“ Stay hydrated β€” lymph is mostly water
βœ“ Lymphatic massage (manual or self)

If detox protocols make you feel worse, lymph is often the missing piece. You can mobilize toxins all day long β€” but if drainage is closed, they have nowhere to go.

Your liver does more for you than any organ except your brain. Right now, as you read this, it's filtering blood, processing hormones, and breaking down toxins from everything you've inhaled, eaten, drunk, and absorbed today.
Detoxification happens in two phases β€” and understanding the difference is the missing piece for most people.

Phase 1 (Activation): Your liver uses a family of enzymes (Cytochrome P450) to make fat-soluble toxins water-soluble. Sounds great β€” except this phase creates reactive intermediates that are often more toxic than the original substance.

Phase 2 (Conjugation): Phase 2 attaches sulfur, glutathione, glycine, or methyl groups to those intermediates so the body can excrete them safely. If Phase 1 runs faster than Phase 2 (very common in modern life), you accumulate the worst version of the toxins. You feel toxic β€” because you ARE toxic, even mid-process.

This is why pushing detox without supporting the pathways often makes people feel WORSE. The bottleneck has to open before you can drain the bucket.

Nutrients to support both phases:
β†’ B vitamins, magnesium
β†’ Sulfur-containing foods
β†’ Glutathione precursors (NAC, whey)
β†’ Adequate protein and hydration
β†’ Bitter greens to support bile flow

Food as therapy. Always.

Here's the concept that changes how you understand chronic illness: TOTAL TOXIC LOAD.

Your body has detox pathways β€” liver, kidneys, lymph, gut, skin, lungs. They work continuously, processing whatever comes in. But they have a capacity. When the daily input exceeds what those pathways can clear, things start backing up.

This is why 'I was fine, and then suddenly I wasn't' is such a common story. You weren't fine. Your bucket was filling.

The mold exposure five years ago. The pesticide-treated apartment from college. The decade of diet soda from BPA-lined cans. The mercury fillings. The candles. The fragrance perfume. The gas stove. The job stress that suppressed your detox. Drop. By drop. By drop. Then one day β€” a new water-damaged office, a course of antibiotics, a high-stress life event β€” adds the drop that overflows the bucket. And suddenly you have 'mystery' symptoms. This is why a 'magic protocol' rarely works on its own.

Healing means BOTH lowering the input AND supporting the pathways that drain the bucket. You aren't crazy. Your body isn't broken. The bucket is full. The work is to empty it β€” slowly, sustainably, and with support.

πŸ”– Save this for the next time someone tells you 'it's all in your head.'

Most people think 'air pollution' is something that happens outside, in cities, near highways. The data says otherwise: the air inside the average home is 2 to 5 times more polluted than the air just outside the front door β€” and sometimes up to 100 times worse during certain activities (cooking on a gas stove, cleaning, burning candles).

Why? Modern homes are sealed for energy efficiency. That same sealing traps everything that off-gasses, evaporates, or burns inside. Add a gas stove without proper ventilation, a few synthetic candles, some new furniture, and standard cleaning products β€” and you've got a chemical soup that you breathe 16+ hours a day. Your body especially detoxes during sleep. If your bedroom air is bad, you wake up tired no matter how many hours you slept.

The good news: indoor air is one of the easiest variables to change. Open a window. Use your range hood. Get a HEPA purifier for where you sleep. Switch out a few products. The shifts are simple, and your nervous system will feel them within days.

πŸ’¬ Comment your current biggest indoor air culprit and we'll suggest a swap.

BPA. Phthalates. PFAS.

The plastic problem isn't just environmental β€” it's hormonal. These chemicals are called endocrine disruptors because they mimic, block, or alter your natural hormones. Your body can't always tell the difference between estrogen and an estrogen-mimicking molecule from a plastic bottle. So it responds to both.

Where they hide:
β€’ Plastic water bottles (especially when warmed in cars or sun)
β€’ Food storage containers (especially when microwaved)
β€’ Receipt paper (BPA absorbs through skin within seconds)
β€’ Canned food linings
β€’ Vinyl shower curtains, kids' toys, raincoats
β€’ Non-stick cookware (PFAS β€” 'forever chemicals')
β€’ Cosmetics (phthalates make scents last longer)

What they're linked to:
β†’ Estrogen dominance, PCOS, fertility issues
β†’ Early puberty in children
β†’ Thyroid dysfunction
β†’ Insulin resistance and weight gain
β†’ Lower testosterone in men
β†’ Increased risk of certain cancers

Realistic swaps:
βœ“ Glass or stainless steel water bottle
βœ“ Glass food storage
βœ“ Refuse paper receipts when possible
βœ“ Cast iron, stainless, or ceramic cookware
βœ“ Fragrance-free or naturally scented cosmetics
You won't escape plastic entirely. You can lower the dose.

πŸ”– Save & share with someone you love.

There's a reason pesticides cause symptoms even at 'safe' doses. Many of them are neurotoxins by design.
Organophosphate pesticides β€” still widely used in conventional agriculture β€” work by blocking an enzyme called acetylcholinesterase. That enzyme regulates acetylcholine, a key neurotransmitter for muscle movement, memory, and nervous system signaling. Block it in an insect, the insect dies. Block it slowly and chronically in a human, and you get: brain fog, anxiety, headaches, poor concentration, muscle twitches, sleep disruption, mood changes.

Glyphosate (the active ingredient in Roundup) doesn't work the same way, but it's been linked to gut microbiome disruption, mitochondrial dysfunction, and is now found in most municipal water supplies, rainwater, and even umbilical cord blood.

The goal isn't paranoia β€” it's lowering the cumulative load. You don't have to overhaul your entire life this week. Pick one swap: filter your water, switch to organic strawberries, ditch the lawn spray. Then pick another next month. Small changes, repeated, become a different baseline.

πŸ’¬ What's your one swap going to be?
