Why can the same bedtime routine work one night and not the next?

By the time a child or adult gets into bed, the day has already included noise, transitions, work, school, caregiving, stress, excitement, movement, and plenty of demands.

Some of that may still matter when it is time to sleep.

Find out how what happens during the day may affect readiness for sleep, why settling can be easier on some nights than others, and what movement, arousal, sensory input, and nighttime waking may have to do with falling asleep, staying asleep, and waking rested.

Join Mandy and Alex Doman, founder and CEO of Advanced Brain Technologies and co-founder of Sleep Genius live in one week.

When your child struggles, helping becomes part of everyday life.

You repeat directions, remind them what comes next, break things into smaller steps, and stay close when something feels too hard to manage alone.

And as much as you want to be there when your child needs you, you also want to see them become more capable of doing things for themselves.

The Listening Program® is designed to strengthen the listening and processing abilities children rely on to follow directions, stay with a task, organize information, communicate, and move through the day with greater independence.

When your child can’t sleep, you may not sleep either.

You may spend the evening helping them settle, wake again when they do, and then find yourself listening for the next sound long after they are back asleep. By morning, both of you may be starting the day with less rest than you needed.

Sleep challenges rarely affect just one person in a household.

On October 21, join host Mandy Doman and guest expert Alex Doman for Sound Asleep: Why Bedtime Is Only Part of the Story.

We’ll explore what can influence falling asleep, staying asleep, and waking rested, including why some nighttime awakenings pass quickly while others do not, how the day can affect sleep that night, and what movement, arousal, and sensory input may have to do with sleep.

Alex is founder and CEO of Advanced Brain Technologies and co-founder of Sleep Genius.

When learning requires tremendous effort every day, it can begin to change how a child sees themselves.

They may stop raising their hand, avoid reading, resist homework, or ask for help before they have had a chance to try.

After enough difficult experiences, “this is hard for me” can start to feel like “I’m not good at this.”

The Listening Program® is designed to strengthen the listening and processing foundation children rely on for attention, memory, reading, communication, regulation, learning, and greater independence.

That foundation matters because every successful experience gives a child something new to build on.

Understanding what they read. Remembering a direction. Finishing something with less help. Feeling confident enough to participate.

Music can help change how someone is functioning right now.

It can also be used very differently, as part of brain plasticity based training.

A piece of music can influence alertness, attention, movement, mood, and physiology within minutes. It may help someone settle, focus, become more energized, transition, or prepare for the activity at hand.

In that case, the goal is a change in state that supports what the person needs to do right now.

But intentional music listening can have another purpose.

Repeated listening can be used to engage and challenge the brain systems involved in processing sound, giving those systems repeated opportunities to adapt over time.

Our latest article explores these two uses of music and why the distinction matters.

Music can support the state someone needs for the activity at hand. It can also become part of a much longer process of training the brain.

The hardest part of a bad night may be the day that follows.

Sleep can affect energy, mood, thinking, learning, memory, and how much we have available for everyday life. That matters whether sleep has been difficult for you, your child, or someone you care about.

On October 21, join Alex Doman, founder and CEO of Advanced Brain Technologies and co-founder of Sleep Genius, for Sound Asleep: Why Bedtime Is Only Part of the Story.

We’ll explore what can influence falling asleep, staying asleep, and waking rested, including why some nighttime awakenings pass quickly while others do not, and what movement, arousal, and the sensory environment may have to do with sleep.

Alex will also share the NASA funded research that eventually contributed to the development of Sleep Genius.

A child can hear the teacher clearly and still miss what they were supposed to do.

You may see it when they remember the first step of a direction and lose the rest, forget what was assigned, or need you to repeat something you know they heard.

That is where processing comes in.

The brain has to sort through competing sounds, focus on the right voice, hold onto information, and make sense of it quickly enough to respond. For some children, that takes an enormous amount of effort all day long.

The Listening Program® is designed to strengthen this listening and processing foundation.

By now, you may have a pretty clear picture of where the school day is hardest for your child.

Maybe directions need to be repeated. Reading takes enormous effort. Homework requires constant help. A busy classroom leaves them overwhelmed, and by the time they get home, they have very little left.

When listening and processing take more effort than they should, the effects can show up across the entire day.

The Listening Program® is designed to strengthen that foundation. Through a specific protocol using therapeutic music, TLP trains the listening children rely on for attention, memory, reading, communication, regulation, learning, and greater independence.

A child’s meltdown can change the feeling of an entire household in seconds.

A parent’s body reacts. Tone shifts. Breathing changes. A sibling hears it from the next room. A partner walks in and feels the tension before anyone explains what happened.

Regulation does not stay between one parent and one child. It can move through the whole family.

Tomorrow, Alex Doman hosts guest expert Rachel Harrington, COTA/L, CPRCS, for our free live webinar:

Rachel and Alex will explore what happens in a parent’s nervous system when a child escalates and practical ways to recognize their own regulation before stress takes over the room.

Amberly Lago, motivational speaker and bestselling author, describes how she regulates her nervous system: “The Listening Program helps me relax when my pain levels are high and soothes my nerves when I feel frazzled.”
