One of the most valuable habits a phlebotomist can develop is learning when not to rush.
You found the vein.
The supplies are ready.
The patient is waiting.
But before the needle enters the skin, take one final pause.
Ask yourself:
โ Is this the best vein available?
โ Is the tourniquet positioned correctly?
โ Is the patient comfortable and supported?
โ Do I have everything within reach?
That 5-second pause can prevent:
Missed veins
Patient movement
Lost blood flow
Unnecessary second attempts
Experienced phlebotomists understand that successful draws aren't about moving fast.
They're about moving deliberately.
The most confident professionals don't rush the procedure.
They trust the process.
Because in phlebotomy, preparation often determines the outcome long before the needle enters the arm.
Slow is smooth. Smooth is successful.
