In April 2023, actress Olivia Munn was diagnosed with stage 1 Luminal B breast cancer after a Breast Cancer Risk Assessment Tool (BCRAT) score of 37.3% placed her in a high-risk category despite normal routine mammograms and no known genetic mutations. The elevated risk prompted further screening, including MRI, ultrasound, and biopsy, which led to the early detection of an aggressive form of breast cancer.
Following her diagnosis, Munn underwent a double mastectomy within 30 days of her biopsy. Her treatment journey has also included additional surgeries and ongoing hormone suppression therapy aimed at reducing estrogen levels and lowering recurrence risk. She has spoken openly about the physical and emotional challenges of treatment while emphasizing gratitude for early detection.
Beyond her medical journey, Munn has become a prominent advocate for breast cancer awareness, encouraging women to use risk assessment tools such as BCRAT and discuss screening options with healthcare professionals. She credits early risk evaluation for potentially saving her life and has highlighted the importance of combining routine screening with personalized risk assessment.
