Most people don't lift weights, especially later in life when they need it most.
After 50, it’s crucial if you want to stay strong, healthy, and independent throughout life. Here are just seven reasons why mature adults should practice resistance training on a regular basis.
1. It slows age-related muscle loss and builds stronger, more functional muscles. Preserve strength for daily activities, travel, sports, and playing with loved ones.
2. Resistance training burns fat. Think it’s all about cardio? Wrong.
3. Weight training improves balance -- both when standing still and when moving, thus lowering the risk of falls.
4. It eases arthritis pain, lowers blood pressure, and fights obesity. (Wait – that’s three great reasons in one!)
5. Strength training builds bones and fights osteoporosis. This is an extra motivation for women, who lose a small percentage of bone mass each year after menopause.
6. It fights depression among older adults, as well as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and more.
7. Weightlifting helps you sleep better, which in turn helps you move and think better.
Plus, let’s not forget this: It’s fun.

Packed with fiber and nutrients, broccoli can make a wholesome meal out of practically any staples you can rustle up. And it’s easy to keep in the freezer.
This recipe, lightly adapted from Eating Well, is easy to pull together on a busy evening. If you have cold cuts, leftover chicken, cooked shrimp, or canned chickpeas on hand, throw them in for extra protein. And you’ll only have one pan to rinse out when you’re done! Serves 4. --Susan Puckett
Ingredients
• 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
• 1 medium shallot, minced (or ½ cup chopped onions)
• 2 cloves garlic, minced
• 8 ounces regular or whole-wheat rotini, rigatoni, farfalle other short pasta
• 1¾ cups water
• 1 ½ cups low-sodium vegetable broth or chicken broth
• Grated zest and juice of 1 lemon
• Salt and pepper
• 1 (10-ounce) package frozen broccoli florets, thawed
• ½ cup slivered salami (optional)
• ⅓ cup grated Parmesan cheese
Instructions
Heat the oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add the shallot and cook, stirring, until starting to soften, about 2 minutes. Add the garlic and cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 30 seconds.
Add the pasta, water, broth, lemon zest, and ½ teaspoon each salt and pepper. Cover and bring to a boil.
Uncover, reduce the heat to medium-high and cook, stirring frequently, for 10 minutes. Add the broccoli and cook, stirring, until heated through, 2 to 3 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in salami, if using, along with Parmesan and 1 tablespoon of the lemon juice. Taste and add more lemon juice, salt, and pepper as desired.
