Chronic pain is something we need more solutions for. Chronic pain affects nearly 1 in 4 U.S. adults and can severely affect quality of life. If that's you, my heart goes out to you. ❤️

While opioids can play an important role for some people, nearly 80,000 overdose deaths in 2023 involved opioids, highlighting the need for a broad toolbox of pain management options. Chronic high doses of NSAIDs have been linked gut microbiome damage, kidney damage and increased blood pressure. Did you know there are other options?

Here are 4 things that may help support chronic pain naturally:

1️⃣ Focus on Whole Foods and Reduce Ultra-Processed Foods (UPFs)

A simple rule of thumb: if the ingredient list is long and contains ingredients you wouldn't typically find in your own kitchen, it's likely moving into UPF territory. Replacing these foods with nutrient dense whole foods or quality processed foods (ingredients you recognize!) may help support a healthier inflammatory response. Diet sodas / anything with aspartame can also really irritate joints.

2️⃣ Targeted Supplementation

A high quality turmeric or liposomal curcumin supplement can be a valuable tool for supporting the body's natural inflammatory pathways. I also like SPM Supreme® from Designs for Health, which contains specialized pro-resolving mediators that help support the body's natural process of resolving inflammation. I recommend both morning and night to help with chronic pain, those dose will depend on the person.

3️⃣ Acupuncture

Research suggests acupuncture may help reduce chronic pain by stimulating the release of endorphins, improving blood flow, and influencing the nervous system's perception of pain. For many people, it can be a valuable addition to their pain management toolbox. Dry needling can also be beneficial.

4️⃣ Movement

Stiff joints are often painful joints. While movement can be the last thing you feel like doing when you're hurting, appropriate movement helps lubricate joints, improve circulation, maintain muscle strength, and reduce stiffness.

⭐ Honorable Mentions

Bone Broth: Bone broth contains collagen, gelatin, and amino acids that help support connective tissue, joints, and overall tissue repair. While it’s not a magic cure for chronic pain, it can be a simple, nutrient-dense addition to support joint health.

• Chiropractic Care: Chiropractic care has helped me tremendously throughout my life by improving mobility and reducing musculoskeletal pain. However, it may be less effective when pain is primarily driven by systemic conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis.

• Iovera®: A non-opioid treatment that uses controlled cold therapy to temporarily interrupt pain signals from specific nerves and may help reduce knee pain. Can be very helpful for nerve pain!

• PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) Therapy: Blood is drawn, spun in a centrifuge to concentrate platelets and growth factors, and then injected into the affected joint or tissue to support healing and recovery.

• Stem Cell Therapy: Uses cells typically harvested from your own bone marrow or fat tissue and injected into an injured or arthritic joint with the goal of supporting repair and improving function.

Red Light Therapy: uses specific wavelengths of light that may help support cellular energy production, reduce inflammation, and promote tissue healing. Some studies suggest it may help reduce pain and improve function in certain musculoskeletal conditions. The key is getting one that is for therapeutic use! Blockblue light and Sunlighten brands I know are the right wavelength for this.

Research has shown that parabens can mimic estrogen in the body, which is why organizations like the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and the Endocrine Society recognize them as potential endocrine disrupting chemicals.

Another concern? Studies have detected parabens in human breast tissue, blood, and urine, showing that regular exposure from personal care products can accumulate over time. I am personally seeing clients with parabens show up in their urine-based toxin panels, with women predominantly having higher levels than men.

This matters because hormone-related issues are becoming increasingly common. Research shows infertility now affects an estimated 1 in 6 people globally, and endocrine-disrupting chemicals are being increasingly studied as one of the contributing environmental factors. (PMC)

One product alone probably isn’t the issue, the bigger concern is cumulative exposure from dozens of products used every single day.

Start reading labels and watch for ingredients like methylparaben, propylparaben, and butylparaben. The EWG Skin Deep Database is a great tool for checking your products to see if they have parabens and other potential hormone disruptors. https://www.ewg.org/skindeep/.

I have put together a Clean Alternatives Guide that has many personal care products me and my family have switched to over the years. It has taken a long time to find ones that work well and don’t break the bank, so save yourself some time and DM me for the guide! 😊

Mycotoxins.

Secondary metabolites released by certain molds.

These mycotoxins can accumulate in the body, and here are some receipts… 👀

This client had extremely high mycotoxins show up on their panel.

On the highlighted left side, you can see the client’s results. On the highlighted right side, you can see the level considered high.

For Ochratoxin A, anything over 1.8 is considered high.

Their result was 13.75. 😳

That is over 7.6x the level considered high… and that is just ONE mycotoxin.

This client was positive across ALL test groups. Some markers are not even pictured because they would not all fit in one image.

Ochratoxin A has been studied for its potential toxic effects and has been shown in experimental animal studies to be:

• Nephrotoxic — toxic to the kidneys
• Immunosuppressive — can weaken or suppress the immune system
• Carcinogenic — linked to cancer development
• Teratogenic — may interfere with fetal development during pregnancy
• Neuroinflammatory — which can be associated with depression, brain fog, headaches, poor memory, anxiety and mood imbalance.

This is why mold exposure is not something I take lightly.

If you have a history of water damage, mold exposure, chronic unexplained symptoms, or simply suspect something deeper may be going on… it may be worth looking into.

Message me if you are ready to check into your potential toxin load and more importantly, to begin removing them.

Trying to break a bad habit?

1️⃣ Reduce and replace. Instead of trying to completely cut something out overnight, start by reducing the amount and replacing part of it with a better-for-you alternative. For example, if you drink 3 Dr Peppers a day, start by replacing one with something healthier first. From there, you can build upon that progress by weaning yourself off.

2️⃣ Make the unhealthy choice less convenient. It’s often easier to control your environment than to rely on willpower all day long. Don’t keep tempting foods and drinks front and center or avoid bringing them into the house as often in the first place.

Small habits repeated consistently can completely change your health over time 💛

Will drinking a single Dr. Pepper kill you or give you disease? NO!
Does drinking Dr. Pepper make you a bad person? NO!
Does consuming it every single day increase your risk of multiple kinds of chronic disease? YES!

I cut out 11,862.5 teaspoons of sugar per year simply by cutting out my daily Dr. Pepper habit and replacing it with other things I enjoy.

Insulin Resistance… what does it actually mean? Why does it matter?

Research shows insulin resistance can be developing for 10–15 years before pre-diabetes or diabetes shows up on standard labs. During that time, blood sugar can still look normal, but the body is producing more and more insulin to keep it there, which is not a long term solution. This is why a fasting insulin test can be so helpful - it tells us if there is dysfunction before a disease state begins. It is so much easier to prevent and reverse at that point!

It’s also important to understand that insulin isn’t ever truly “not working”, but it IS being used much less efficiently, so the body has to compensate by making more of it. Over time, if that demand continues, it can progress into pre-diabetes and eventually diabetes. I am trying to simplify the issue here, but think of it more as if insulin resistance is when the call isn’t ‘answered’ half the time, rather than it never being answered.

Have you ever heard of mycotoxins? Most people haven’t.

Mycotoxins are toxic compounds produced by certain molds.
Not all mold is harmful, but some mold species can release toxic secondary metabolites that impact your health.

Many molds found in water-damaged buildings can produce mycotoxins.
Exposure can also come from certain foods, peanuts and coffee are commonly discussed sources.

Here’s what most people don’t realize:
It doesn’t have to be a recent exposure.
These toxins can stick around in the body long after the exposure is gone.

And exposure is more common than you’d think…
It’s estimated that a large percentage of U.S. buildings have had some level of water damages — homes, schools, offices, and workplaces can all be potential sources.

The good news?
There are ways to look deeper. There are also things that can be done to help minimize mycotoxin exposure if you are unable to move or remediate right away.

We can test for mycotoxins and support the body’s natural detox pathways with targeted nutrition and supplementation.

If you’ve had known mold exposure or unexplained symptoms that aren’t adding up, message me and let’s explore if this could be a piece of your puzzle.

Check out a glimpse of a positive mycotoxin panel in the comments!

Want some variety in your healthy eating? Try this Whole Foods-based meatloaf that hits the nostalgia AND supports your health. It is a regular at our house!

Ingredients:
• 2 lbs ground beef
• 1 small onion (or ½ large), finely chopped
• 1-1.5 cups oats (depending on your preference)
• 3–4 eggs
• Ketchup (for topping)
• Salt or seasoning to taste

Instructions:
1. Preheat oven to 400°F
2. Mix all ingredients (except ketchup) in a large bowl
3. Form into a loaf and place into a 8x10 baking dish
4. Bake for 45–55 minutes
5. At the 30-minute mark, pull it out and top with ketchup
6. Return to oven and finish baking.

Tip: Throw a sheet pan of veggies in at the same time - broccoli, asparagus, cauliflour, Brussels sprouts, whatever you’ve got. Dinner = done!

Why this works:

•It’s simple, contains common household ingredients + takes 10 min to prep.
• Protein + fat → keeps you full, stabilizes blood sugar
• Oats + onion → adds fiber + flavor + replaces ultra-processed alternatives
• Whole ingredients → no mystery additives, just real food

The ketchup, seasoning and oats I use are in the comments!
