To our beloved community,

It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we share the news that the North Carolina Birth Center will close its doors effective June 30th, 2026.

This is a message we hoped we’d never have to write. The trust you placed in us was a gift we never took for granted.

We grieve for our clients who envisioned welcoming their babies here. We grieve for the families who found comfort, safety, and support within these walls. We grieve for our dedicated team, who poured their hearts into this work every single day. And we grieve for our community, which will feel the loss of a place built on connection, compassion, and the belief that families deserve personalized, respectful care.

We are grateful to our beautiful birth community for stepping in to help us transfer our patients into their care with as much respect and ease as possible

Thank you for allowing us to be part of your journeys. Thank you for believing in birth center care. Thank you for the privilege of serving you.

With deep gratitude, sorrow, and love,

The North Carolina Birth Center Team

Today we celebrate Midwives and all the care and support they bring to families around the world. The word ‘Midwife’ comes from Old English origins meaning “With-Woman”. Midwifery is one of the oldest practices in recorded history dating back thousands of years. It is likely that none of us would be here without the care a Midwife provided to our ancestors at some point. Please take a minute today to thank a Midwife, to applaud a Midwife, to honor a Midwife.

And this year, we focus on how this essential workforce remains under-supported and urgently needed. Across the globe, there is a growing call to expand access to midwifery care. This means investing in education and training programs, improving insurance reimbursement so midwives can sustainably serve their communities, and breaking down barriers so more families can access this model of care. When we support midwives, we support safer births, healthier families, and stronger communities.

Please take a moment to share a comment of praise, or to share a memory or word about a Midwife in your life.

NCBC is excited to be hosting a documentary screening of No One Told Me on March 21st, 2026 at 4pm

“No One Told Me provides a raw and honest look at the postpartum period, a unique time in a woman’s life that is rarely captured in documentary film. The purely observational footage of incredibly intimate moments shows the highs and lows encountered by parents Elise and Marc as they adapt to life with a baby. Focusing on the new mother, the film shares the physical, hormonal and psychological changes she faces during the first 10 weeks of motherhood.”

There’s something extra special about Friday morning trainings on a cozy, rainy day.

At NCBC, our Midwives and Birth Assistants gather regularly to sharpen skills, review safety drills, and stay current on research based standards of care, because excellence in birth work requires intention and practice.

From hands-on skill refreshers to reviewing the latest guidelines, we are committed to providing our families with high-quality, safe, and deeply supportive care.

Rain outside. Warm coffee inside. A team dedicated to you is always learning and always growing.

Meet Mariam!

Mariam joined NCBC in November 2023 as the Outreach & Education Coordinator, helping build strong connections within our local birth community and guiding the journey of creating and renovating our Birth Center home. When NCBC opened in April 2025, she stepped into an additional role as the Office Manager, while bringing deep knowledge, heart, and dedication to our mission.

Her journey as a birth worker began in 2014 as a volunteer Doula with the Birth Partners program at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. While working full-time as a research specialist at UNC, parenting, and serving as a volunteer doula, she earned her Birth Doula Certification through DONA International, marking the start of her professional path supporting families through pregnancy, birth, and beyond. Her journey would continue into becoming a certified childbirth educator and lactation counselor.

By the age of 15, Mariam had lived in Italy, Switzerland, Canada, and the U.S., eventually settling in Los Angeles before earning her B.S. in Biology from University of California, Davis. In 2013, she and her husband took a leap of faith by moving to North Carolina and have never looked back.

Now based in Durham with her husband, two kids, and their dog, Mariam loves cooking, crocheting, nature walks, and true-crime podcasts (send your recs!). We’re so grateful for the passion and care she brings to NCBC every day.
