How many times have you tried to begin a new habit or start a new routine only to find, after a while, that you start slipping back into old patterns?

And suddenly you end up right back where you started, wondering why went wrong this time.

If this sounds familiar, know that you didn't do anything wrong, you just missed a key step.

Real change starts under the surface, at the identity level. It comes down to who your brain believes you are, not just what you're trying to change.

This week we're walking through the 3 step framework- Episode 213-Pretty Well Podcast.

There's one small habit I've started doing at night that has changed my mornings more than any 5 AM routine or personal growth morning ever did. I learned it from Chase Hughes.

He calls it "Gifting your future self."

Before bed: he cleans the kitchen, preps the coffee, and sets out his clothes. So when he wakes up in the morning, he thinks– look how past me already took care of present me.

At the end of winter, he tucks $100 into the pocket of his winter coat. So next fall when he reaches in for the first cold day walk… Surprise.

Here is why this hits so deep for us in midlife. Most of us have spent decades taking care of everyone better than ourselves. Our nervous systems don't trust that we will take care of us… because we haven't.

Every tiny gift you leave your future self is a deposit in the bank account of self trust. This is the thing that actually changes your life. Not the perfect routine, but the identity and proof that you have your own back.

I've bought more journals than I want to admit.

Each time I think: this is the one. This is the system that finally sticks. Millionaire mornings. The 5 AM Club. The Optimized Routine. The Personal Growth Method.

Every week, by week two, the whole thing would fizzle. And I'd start asking myself the question"What's wrong with me that I can't maintain a consistent morning routine?" Sound familiar?

Here's what I know after years of working with "get it done" women: nothing is wrong with you. You're not doing it wrong. The routines just weren't built for you.

In this week's episode I walk through the three most common routine archetypes – the 5 AM hustle, the Optimized Morning, the Personal Growth Morning.

I talk about the main reasons each one may have failed you. Then I share the simple shift that actually sticks for once and for all.

A lot of women think they're failing at consistency and willpower when they're actually exhausted.

There's a difference.

Some morning routines seem productive (even impressive) but they're pushing your nervous system further into overwhelm.

Eventually your body starts opting out.
It's not because you're lazy or lack discipline but because your system no longer sees the routine as supportive.

That shift changed everything for me.

The goal stopped being:
"How do I push harder?"

And became:
"What actually helps me to feel grounded enough that makes it worthwhile to return to this consistently?"

That's a very different question.

Curious if anyone else has experienced something like this. What's one wellness habit you've tried forcing that actually made you feel more overwhelmed?

She wasn't a doctor. She wasn't a scientist.

She was a wife who refused to accept "there's nothing we can do."

When Martha Carlin's husband, John, was diagnosed with early onset Parkinson's in his 40s, every specialist told her the same thing – manage the decline. There is no cure.

So she taught herself microbiology. She read thousands of studies. She traveled the world to meet researchers.

And she made a discovery that's now reshaping how we understand brain disease, mood, hormones, and aging: it all starts in the gut.

20 years later, Martha has built one of the most respected microbiome companies in the country--driven by the love of a woman who wouldn't stop searching for answers.

This week on Pretty Well Podcast, she sat down with me to share her story, the science, and what every woman in midlife needs to know about healing her gut.
