Obviously, maternal infant health outcomes are multifaceted.

But the rate of inductions has jumped 34% from 2016 to 2024.

Could an increase in elective inductions be impacting our overall outcomes?

In obstetrics, the first postpartum visit usually happens at 6 weeks. And then, magically, it’s as if you’re expected to “graduate” from postpartum care and move on - to have “bounced back.”

But here’s the truth: adjusting to motherhood and finding your new normal doesn’t happen in just 6 weeks. Physiologically, it can take up to 2 years to fully reset—and hormonally, especially if you’re breastfeeding and your estrogen is suppressed, it can feel like a rollercoaster ride at times.

The postpartum period is a time of profound changes, not just physically, but hormonally and emotionally. From nutritional demands and sleep deprivation, to navigating the intense shifts in identity, this is a season of transformation. For many, postpartum depression or anxiety can surface not just in the early weeks but months—or even a year or two—later.
Getting support during this time is essential. This means practical help—like meals, childcare, and rest—as well as professional care for your physical and emotional health.

And if you feel like you need extra support—whether it’s from a lactation consultant, a therapist, or a postpartum care provider—don’t hesitate to seek it out. You deserve care and the time to adjust to this new phase of life.

For more in-depth guidance, my book Natural Health After Birth—the first and most comprehensive modern postpartum book—covers everything you need to know about resetting to the new you that includes motherhood, from self-care and nutrition, to navigating the emotional shifts of this life-changing time.

And if you’re pregnant, postpartum, or planning a pregnancy, my Mama Pathway course and community are here to guide you through this journey with tools, resources, and unparalleled support. 🌿 Comment “MAMAPATH” for the link!

How has your postpartum journey been, whether you’re newly postpartum or years past it? Share your experience in the comments—I’d love to hear from you. 💕

Nearly half of Arkansas’s counties are maternity care deserts, forcing rural families to drive over an hour for basic birth care.
Midwives are helping bridge this gap! By offering community-based clinical care, they deliver vital prenatal oversight, postpartum support, and safe birth care where families need it most.
As doulas, we see the profound impact of this first hand. When midwives lead clinical care and doulas provide continuous emotional support, it creates a safety net for our communities. Midwifery care isn't a luxury—it's essential healthcare, and expanding home birth & midwifery access across Arkansas is critical to healing our state's maternity care deserts. 🩺✨

Every decision in midwifery is guided by knowledge, clinical judgment, and a commitment to individualized care.

Midwives thoughtfully assess each situation, consider the best available evidence, recognize when circumstances change, and partner with families through shared decision-making. They understand that every pregnancy, every birth, and every family is unique—and that care should reflect those individual needs.

Thoughtful decision-making isn't about having all the answers. It's about asking the right questions, carefully evaluating information, communicating openly, and responding with skill, compassion, and professionalism.

At ATMMTP, we prepare future midwives to think critically, practice ethically, and make informed decisions that support safe, respectful, and evidence-informed care.

Because exceptional midwifery is built not only on knowledge—but on the wisdom to apply it with care.

I learn something new at every birth even after 20 years of practice.

The journey to becoming a midwife doesn't end at graduation—it continues throughout a lifetime of caring for families.

Every birth, every clinical experience, every new piece of research, and every conversation with a colleague offers an opportunity to learn and grow. Lifelong learning strengthens clinical judgment, refines practical skills, and helps midwives continue providing safe, evidence-informed care.

At ATMMTP, we encourage our students to develop more than knowledge—we encourage a mindset of curiosity. Through comprehensive coursework, hands-on workshops, clinical training, and mentorship, students build a strong foundation while embracing the understanding that learning is a lifelong commitment.

The best midwives never stop asking questions, seeking knowledge, and striving to provide the highest quality care.

Because excellence isn't a destination—it's a commitment to keep learning.

I love this.

I love this.

Birth asks a woman to go somewhere deep within herself.

The hands around her matter.

Not because they hold the power to make birth safe, successful, or a particular kind of experience. And not because a woman needs someone else to give her strength.

But because the people beside her can either reinforce her relationship with herself, or slowly, sometimes unintentionally, ask her to hand it over.

Good support doesn’t say, I know what’s best for you.

It says, I am with you as you remain at the centre of this.

To offer knowledge without ownership.
Guidance without control.
Presence without taking over.

Because the power was never ours to give her.

It was hers all along.

The importance of Postpartum care is so often overlooked. I can speak from firsthand experience as a Midwife that more clients decline postpartum care especially after the 2-week follow-up. But the postpartum time is much longer and continued support is critical for both mom and baby.

Birth is a milestone—but it isn't the end of the journey.

The days and weeks after birth are a time of healing, adjustment, and new beginnings. During this period, families benefit from skilled care that supports physical recovery, emotional well-being, infant feeding, and the transition into parenthood.

Midwives continue to walk alongside families after birth by monitoring recovery, recognizing potential complications, providing education, supporting breastfeeding and bottle-feeding, and creating space for questions, reassurance, and encouragement.

At ATMMTP, we prepare future midwives to understand that postpartum care is not an afterthought—it's an essential part of comprehensive, relationship-centered care. Through education, hands-on workshops, and clinical training, our students learn how to support families well beyond the birth itself.

Because exceptional care doesn't end when a baby is born. It continues as families grow.
