The MUSC Department of Surgery is excited to welcome several new faculty members this month! Today, please help us welcome:

Lauren Huckaby, M.D., Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery. She specializes in adult cardiac surgery with a subspecialty in open and endovascular aortic surgery.

Oliver Jawitz, M.D., Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, is an adult cardiac surgeon who performs a wide spectrum of general cardiac surgery operations, including coronary artery bypass grafting, valve repair and replacement, and aortic interventions.

Chris Thomas, M.D., Division of Acute Care Surgery, is an acute care surgeon specializing in trauma surgery, emergency general surgery, and surgical critical care.

Congratulations to our August Employees of the Month: Katrina Sueck, Administrative Coordinator for Vascular Surgery; Reece Kerr, an APP for CT Surgery; and Spencer Cooke, M.D., a PGY-2 in the General Surgery Residency Program!

Katrina's nominator wrote, "Katrina has been very prompt, thorough, and helpful in scheduling patients for OR, and contacting patients to answer their questions. All of this has been done with a very positive attitude and spirit, much appreciated!"

Reece's nominator wrote, "Reece has been a huge contributor to onboarding and training new APPs. She is an excellent teacher and designed a training program for them to help expedite onboarding."

Our surgeons and staff enjoyed stopping by Robot Week last week to learn more about new technologies and techniques and how they can be applied to patient care.

Check out this article featuring Dr. Mary Kate Bryant, which discusses the use of electrical stimulation to help ease the symptoms of gastroparesis.

For people living with gastroparesis, nausea, vomiting, bloating and difficulty eating can make everyday life challenging.

At MUSC Health, doctors have used gastric electrical stimulation in about 2,000 patients with gastroparesis. The adjustable, reversible neurostimulator sends mild electrical pulses to the stomach and may help ease symptoms when other treatments haven't worked.

Dr. Mary Kate Bryant says most patients with nausea and vomiting as their primary symptoms see about 80% improvement with the treatment.

For patient Diane Hall, the difference has meant less bloating and being able to tolerate more foods, including salad.

Last weekend, we had General Surgery Residents present at the NC/SC ACS conference. Podium presentations were given by Dr. Libbe Christophel, Dr. Mallorie Huff, Dr. Catia Sleet, Dr. Nate Risk, Dr. Allison Frederick, and Dr. Ellie Rasmussen. In the Trauma paper competition, Dr. Sleet took 1st place, Dr. Risk took 2nd place, and Dr. Frederick took 3rd place. In the Cancer paper competition, Dr. Rasmussen won 1st place. Congratulations and keep up the great work!

Last week, we introduced our General Surgery PGY- 1 to Robotic Surgery in the Surgery Sim lab! We caught a few photos of them trying different exercises on the daVinci Robot and the FLS trainers.

On Friday, MUSC College of Medicine raised the final beam on it’s new building during their Topping-Off Ceremony! Dr. Baliga was there to sign the beam on behalf of the Department of Surgery. The new building is set to open in 2027!
