What should you do when a client says, "I don't know" in therapy?

For many new therapists, hearing "I don't know" can feel frustrating or anxiety-provoking. You might wonder if the client is avoiding the question, if you asked it the wrong way, or if the session is stuck.

In the latest episode of The Keys to Therapy on Youtube, I share:

✔️ What "I don't know" may actually mean
✔️ Common mistakes therapists make in these moments
✔️ Exact phrases you can use to respond
✔️ How to approach uncertainty with curiosity instead of pressure
✔️ Why "I don't know" can actually lead to some of the deepest therapeutic work

How do you redirect a therapy session without sounding awkward, rude, or overly controlling?

For many new therapists, redirecting clients can feel uncomfortable, especially when sessions go off-topic, become circular, or start drifting away from the main concern.

In this video, I break down:

✔️ Why therapy sessions go off track
✔️ When to redirect vs when to follow the client
✔️ Common mistakes new therapists make
✔️ Exact phrases you can use to redirect naturally
✔️ How to redirect with warmth and confidence

Learning how to guide a session is an important clinical skill that many therapists were never directly taught in grad school, but this episode can teach you the skills needed to help clients grow.

One aspect of my business I haven’t shared much about here is speaking engagements! I love meeting with others to share my knowledge and experience to help them meet their goals.

Yesterday, I went to Carolina Psychology Center to do a one hour workshop for their Mentorship for Bachelor’s Level Psychology Students program. I shared my career path with them and opened the floor to questions. Wow!! They asked so many thought provoking and detailed questions! I loved the participation and the time went by too quickly.

I love helping newbies to the field understand what their careers can look like, while providing them honest guidance on the pros and cons of this field. And believe me, I am HONEST about how messy things can be 😜

I’m looking forward to the next one!! 🤩

How do you start a therapy session without feeling awkward or unsure what to say?

For many new therapists, the beginning of a session can feel the most uncomfortable. You might find yourself overthinking how to open, worrying about saying the “right” thing, or feeling pressure to lead perfectly from the start.

In this video, I break down simple, natural ways to start a therapy session so you can feel more confident and grounded.

I’ll cover:

✔️ What to say at the beginning of a session
✔️ How to open sessions without overthinking
✔️ Why simple questions work best
✔️ How to create a smooth, client-centered start

If you’re a new or early-career therapist, learning how to start sessions confidently is a foundational clinical skill that builds over time and will benefit both the therapist and client.
