NC MedAssist

NC MedAssist NC MedAssist is a statewide nonprofit pharmacy providing prescription medicine to uninsured, low-income residents at no cost. FOOD OR MEDICINE??

Through our Free Pharmacy Program, OTC Free Store, and Mobile Free Pharmacy events, we are dispensing hope across NC. That is the stark choice that faces more and more members of our own community. As costs of prescription drugs continue to rise and the numbers of uninsured reach all time highs, providing a no cost source for life-saving prescription drugs becomes critical. NC MedAssist exists to

provide free medications to the uninsured by qualifying patients for patient assistance programs offered by pharmaceutical companies and dispensing them directly to patients. Over the past 12 years, NC MedAssist has dispensed over $30 million in free prescription medicines to over 15,000 low-income residents. In Mecklenburg County, NC MedAssist serves as a Community Pharmacy dispensing free prescription medication to our neighbors who are uninsured. Residents of the county can qualify for our services if they are at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level. At our two locations in Charlotte, we do not have doctors on staff so you must have a prescription slip written by a doctor to apply. If you believe that you may be eligible for help with your prescription medication, please call us at 704-536-1790. We can screen you on the phone to let you know how we may be able to assist you. We also serve as the Central Fill Pharmacy for North Carolina's Free Clinics. Patients access our services through the physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners that serve these clinics across the state.

Yesterday, we officially revealed NC MedAssist’s FY27–29 Strategic Focus — marking a new chapter for our organization and our mission.

As the needs of North Carolinians continue to grow and evolve, our Strategic Focus gives us a clear path forward: one grounded in greater focus, intention, and a commitment to building an even stronger future for the people and communities we serve.

It was meaningful to share this moment with longtime friends and partners, as well as new supporters joining us in the work ahead. A special thank you to our Board Chair, Jay Vora, PharmD, MBA Vora, for hosting this morning’s gathering, and to board members Laura Magennis, DNP, RN, RNC-OB, NPD-BC and Ryan Smith, CPA for joining us and helping us charge forward into this next chapter.

We’re grateful for everyone helping us move this mission forward. Together, we’re ready to turn this vision into action and continue dispensing hope across North Carolina.

We’re grateful to the Coverys Community Healthcare Foundation, Inc. for an $80,000 contribution supporting improvements that will help NC MedAssist connect eligible patients with their medications more quickly.

Thank you, Coverys, for helping us reduce barriers and put timely medication access within reach for more uninsured North Carolinians.

Our FY26 Q4 Dispensing Hope Quarterly is here!

This final edition looks back at the final months of growth and impact at NC MedAssist in FY26 — including the transition from our OTC Free Store to a statewide distribution model, welcoming new members to our Board of Directors, and the impact of the latest phase of our OTC medication distribution efforts in Western North Carolina.

As we dive into FY27, we’re building on that momentum to expand access to essential medications, strengthen partnerships across the state, and reach more North Carolinians in need.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this year possible. We’re grateful for your support and excited for what’s ahead.

Huge shoutout to our incredible Mayor's Youth Employment Program Mayor's Youth Employment Program (MYEP) interns, who recently completed their internship with us at NC MedAssist!

🔴 These future healthcare leaders put in over 600 hours of service and made a tangible difference in our community:

🔴 Organized 300+ boxes in our warehouse

🔴 Processed 50+ application approvals and organized 100+ mobile free pharmacy applications

Beyond the numbers, they gained hands-on experience in medication access, patient support, inventory management, and teamwork, giving them valuable insight into the power of nonprofit healthcare.

What a week!

Last Tuesday and Thursday, we hosted our first Community Health & Wellness Day events following the transition from our OTC Free Store, and what an incredible start it was.

With the help of our incredible community partners and volunteers, we:

🔴 Distributed more than 500 bags of free over-the-counter medications
🔴 Provided adult incontinence supplies to more than 80 individuals in partnership with Diaper Bank of NC - Greater Charlotte
🔴 Helped 100+ community members access Narcan, medication lockboxes, and prescription drug disposal products through our partners at Carolinas CARE Partnership and Mecklenburg County Government Public Health Department
🔴 Connected 30 individuals with health screenings and vaccinations through our mobile health partners, Novant Health, Care Ring, and Atrium Health

Even beyond those numbers, community members were connected with healthcare providers, food resources, maternal and child health services, and other essential support.

A special thank you to the incredible volunteers from Elevation Church, who spent part of their Love Week serving alongside our team. Your energy, compassion, and willingness to help made these events possible and reminded us what can happen when a community comes together to care for one another.

Thank you again to all our partners and volunteers for with us! We look forward to hosting more Community Health & Wellness Days in the future. Stay tuned!

Thanks to the generous support of the Community Foundation of Burke County, more uninsured Burke County residents are getting the medications they need to manage chronic conditions and improve their health.

Over the past year, NC MedAssist served 268 active Burke County patients, providing 1,506 free 30-day prescription fills valued at more than $208,000. Nearly 67% of patients received medications for chronic conditions like diabetes, asthma, and high blood pressure, while 38% received medications supporting behavioral health.

For patients like Valerie, access to medication has been life-changing. Before NC MedAssist, she struggled to afford her prescriptions, causing her blood sugar and blood pressure to rise. Today, she says her blood pressure is down and her diabetes is improving.

Tracy, another Burke County patient, shared that access to medication for high blood pressure, depression, anxiety, and stroke recovery has made a tremendous difference. "I'm very thankful that MedAssist is here for me," she said.

Together, we're ensuring that cost is never the reason someone goes without the medication they need. Thank you to the Community Foundation of Burke County for investing in healthier individuals, stronger families, and a healthier Burke County.
