When you’re raising a family without much of a village, there aren’t many people to lean on.
There’s no one to call when you need a break. No grandparents coming over for the evening. No easy option to hand the kids off so you can go out and remember what it feels like to just be a couple again.
So a lot of the time, it’s just us.
And sometimes that’s really beautiful.
But sometimes it’s really hard, too.
Because when you only have each other to lean on, your spouse can also end up getting the brunt of your exhaustion.
They get the short temper.
The frustration.
The overstimulation.
The “I just need everyone to leave me alone for five minutes.”
And they’re exhausted, too.
It’s so easy to get caught up in the logistics of raising a family that you stop making space for the relationship that created the family in the first place.
So we’re trying to be more intentional about finding those little moments.
It doesn’t always mean a babysitter, dinner out, or some big romantic date.
Sometimes it looks like making snacks after the kids go to bed and sitting on the couch together.
Sometimes it’s ten minutes sitting on the porch at night, talking without discussing the kids.
Sometimes it’s just remembering to look at each other and say, “Hey, I’m still here. I still choose you.”
Because motherhood is a huge part of who we are now.
But before we were Mom and Dad, we were us.
And I don’t want to lose sight of that. 🤍
