When a child is placed in adult roles-a process called Parentification-they are conditioned to believe their value depends on what they do for others rather than who they are. This creates a “false self” that prioritizes external needs over internal signals.

For a parentified child, “doing” was a survival strategy. If they weren’t productive or caretaking, the family system might have felt unstable. As adults, their nervous system associates rest with negligence. They feel a phantom sense of “unfinished business” or “failing someone” the moment they sit still, because their brain still links rest to a loss of safety or worth.

Boundaries require a sense of “self” that is separate from others. Because these children were rewarded for being empathetic mirrors and problem-solvers, they often view “no” as an act of aggression or abandonment and lack an internal “sensor” for their own limits because they were trained to ignore their own exhaustion to keep the peace.

The connection to autoimmune issues is often rooted in chronic physiological stress. When you cannot set boundaries, your body stays in a state of “high alert” (fight or flight). Over decades, the constant drip of cortisol and adrenaline dysregulates the immune system.

Psychologically and biologically, the line between “self” and “other” is blurred. When you spend a lifetime suppressing your own needs to please others, the body can mirror this internal conflict. Research also suggests that Parentification causes chronic inflammation. An immune system that is constantly “on guard” against external perceived threats can eventually lose the ability to distinguish between the body’s own tissues and actual invaders.

Healing from Parentification as an adult is a gradual process of unlearning the role of the “eternal caretaker” and reclaiming your right to have your own needs met. Don’t let shame or embarrassment keep you from getting the healing you need.

Sometimes the hardest part isn’t admitting what happened.

It’s admitting that it affected you.

You may be thinking:

I should have known better.
I can’t believe I allowed this.
What will people think if they knew?
I’m too smart to have gone through this.

I know those thoughts.

But this next level of healing may require you to release the ego that says you should have known better so you can understand yourself better.

“As a therapist, I should have known better.”

That was one of the hardest thoughts I carried when I realized I was experiencing emotional abuse.

I was a therapist.
I understood trauma.
I knew about boundaries.
I knew the signs.

So how did I get here?

But my healing journey taught me something deeper:

I didn’t need to know better.
I needed to know MYSELF better.

I had to understand my own imprints.

Why did I tolerate certain behaviors?

Why did I question myself?

Why did I keep trying to fix what was hurting me?

Why did some unhealthy patterns feel so familiar that I didn’t immediately recognize them as unhealthy?

That’s the thing about emotional abuse.

You can be educated.
Successful.
Strong.
Independent.
A professional.
A therapist.

And still find yourself in a relationship that slowly causes you to lose pieces of yourself.

There is no degree that makes you immune to your own wounds.

And sometimes healing isn’t about learning more about them.

It’s about finally learning YOU.

That is why I created RESTORE: Healing After Emotional Abuse, a 3-week intensive designed to help women understand emotional abuse, recognize unhealthy patterns, explore the imprints that may have kept them stuck, and begin the journey back to themselves.

IS THIS YOU?

Sometimes emotional abuse doesn’t look like abuse while you’re living in it.

It can look like constantly questioning yourself.

Walking on eggshells.

Trying to keep the peace.

Being blamed for everything.

Having your feelings minimized.

Slowly losing confidence in the person you used to be.

And sometimes you’re still working, parenting, building, leading, helping everybody else and looking completely “fine” from the outside.

I know because I’ve been there.

And one of the hardest things I had to sit with was:

“As a therapist, I should have known better.”

But healing taught me something different.

I didn’t need to know better.
I needed to know MYSELF better.

I knew the clinical language.

I understood trauma.

I knew about boundaries, unhealthy relationships, manipulation and emotional abuse.

But knowing the information didn’t mean I understood the imprints within me that made certain behaviors feel familiar.

I had to understand why I stayed.

Why I questioned myself.

Why I kept trying to fix it.

Why I tolerated things that were hurting me.

Why certain patterns felt normal even when they weren’t healthy.

That required something deeper than professional knowledge.

It required me to know myself.

That journey became part of the inspiration behind RESTORE: Healing After Emotional Abuse.

Over three weeks, We’re creating a safe space for women to understand emotional abuse, recognize unhealthy patterns, explore why leaving isn’t always simple, and begin understanding the parts of themselves that may still be carrying the experience.

Because healing isn’t just about understanding them.

At some point, we have to come back and understand US.

Our patterns.
Our imprints.
Our boundaries.
Our wounds.
Our needs.
Our voice.

And most importantly, who we are becoming now.
