Sol William Mottola Schaal is here! He was born on 7/28/26 at 2:23 pm weighing 8 lbs 1.5 ounces and 21 inches long after a marathon labor that started on his due date. Unlike his mom, he’s a very punctual fellow, apparently.

We are all healthy, happy, sleep deprived, and adapting to this newborn stage with our bright Sun. We have been enjoying a morning ritual of listening to “Sol’s Favorites”, a playlist that is steadily growing with songs we’ve been playing since Sol’s womb days, adding loved ones’ favorites/suggestions to the mix. If you have any favorite Sun/Bright Light/New Life/Sweet Celebration themed songs, please let me know and we’ll add them to the mix!

Thank you so very much for sharing your excitement, support, favorite books, onesies, birth stories, meals made with love, words of encouragement, congratulations, and all of your well wishes through this pregnancy and now Sol’s entry into the world. It is not lost on me/us how lucky we are to have such a beautiful and supportive community to help ring in our son’s arrival. Thank you for helping bring him earth-side with such a depth of love and spirit of celebration.

It’s that time of year again y’all- Mimosa (Albizia julibrissin) medicine has pom-pomed out the tree tops, tickling our hearts open a wee bit wider. I saw my first blooms heading to the beach in mid May & have been enjoying the joy of her beauty from afar until this weekend where she coaxed us close with her heavenly sweet flora scent that smells of fairy tea parties and revelry.

Native to China & brought to far away lands as an ornamental in the 1700’s, she’s acclimated quite well & is considered an invasive species here in North Carolina. Like many plants, living out of context from where they grew up, the checks & balances that would keep their growth in balance don’t exist here & so they thrive, sometimes at the expense of plants (& ecosystems) native to this land.

And yet, like other non-native vigorous plants (think knotweed & kudzu- both more aggressive) they have potent medicine to give. The situation we humans find ourselves in is complicated. How do we protect & preserve our environment without doing further harm while also existing in right & honoring relationship with plants that are now a part of this new world of our own making?

Mimosa’s native name translates to “collective happiness tree”, a somewhat ironic (given its classification as invasive) & at the same time touchingly beautiful name. It’s fairy p**f flowers & bark are used as a balm for the heart & spirit- grounding & nourishing those going through challenges with anxiety, depression & insomnia especially when related to loss & grief. They are also a nitrogen-fixer, adding nitrogen back into the soil to nourish future generations.

Our front yard mimosa passed unexpectedly around the same time as our beloved Etty four years ago, leaving behind her much needed medicine for my grieving and grateful heart. Made medicines are such a special way to preserve a plant’s essential essence, available later as needed after the peak season or their life has faded. Thank you Mimosa, for your beingness, your gifts, for challenging us to consider present & future and for the sweet pleasure of a face full of the sweetest poms.

I have some exciting news to share that will effect my availability in the coming months. I am pregnant and due end of July!  I’ve done my best to let as many of you know when I’ve seen you over the last few months but have not managed to share the happy news with everyone. And now, it feels as though things are moving along at warp speed!

My maternity leave will span the following days: July 18th 2025 - October 11th 2025

I intend to return to part time scheduling starting the week of October 12th. As you may know, babies come on their own terms. Therefore, I am asking for flexibility if the date of arrival is different from the due date- earlier or later- and will keep all informed of any changes if they arise in the coming months.

During my leave, Colleen and Jessica will be my steadfast support team (bless those wonder women!!)- managing scheduling needs, and lab and supplement orders, but visits will be on pause for my leave and I will be largely unavailable via the practice portal as I will need to focus on the demands of new mama-hood. Please direct all communications through Colleen and Jessica and they will be happy to support you with non-clinical needs that arise.

In general, I encourage all clients in need to schedule an appointment leading up to my leave to tie up loose ends such as check-ins, lab reviews, lab orders, plan modification, etc. For those that have outstanding lab orders, please be mindful of the turn around time for those tests and get them in with plenty of time for both results to get to me and to schedule a follow up for review. You can schedule appointments with Jessica at 704-504-7901 ext 1.

Your understanding of my role as a specialist and as such, that my practice is not suited to handle urgent and emergency issues, is deeply appreciated. Please understand that such limitations and thus expectations continue to be in place during my maternity leave.

Thank you for your continued trust in my care, and for the happy congratulations and enthusiasm you’ve met this news with thus far. I’m so touched, truly. I look forward to speaking with/seeing you all soon!

What do they carry?

My mother’s hands
I could draw the contoured edges of tendon and vessel and each shapely nail
I can hear the way she picks them when she’s mulling on something
I do it too
I can feel the texture of her palms
Changing through the years
Feel their weight on my back
Needing the comfort of connection

My body knows them and her
In ways that my mind retrieves
Like a deep dive into the depths of the viscera wise womb waters
Like how she plumbs the depths of the great mother
To access reserves
And wisdoms
Available
And unseen

These vast mothers
I am privileged to witness
Their love
Expansive as oceans
Exhaustive depths
Of presence
And patience

Light lenders
On growth paths deep in woods uncharted
Their own,
Others.
Providing
Bioluminescent
Fecund
Shapeshifting

Do you see her face?
In the bark of grandmother cedar
Growing wise with observing years
Or the shade of magnolia

Taking a moment to tenderly trim Earth’s flowers
So they last a few more days
To lay down on the rug to take a moment to pet Jasper
His solid, resilient, very incarnate body
That is here, now
The people on this Earth who see the dead ones
On the side of the road
And perform ceremony- burial, beauty, use.
I am moved by you
Humanized by you
Alived by you
One of you.

The ones who stop to notice
The wee little carpenter bee
The way white clover flowers bloom joyous ballerina arms that later splay out into their tutu
As the blooms progress
The ones who take a sacred moment
To tap into support and love
In the midst of the magical mundane that makes up our lives.
The ones who say- “Hey, you-“
“See me.”
Witness my pain, my heartache,
My heaving,
Breathing life.
The ones who,
In their Earthenware
Reconnect to sustenance in as tangible a way he can conceive of
And share that journey with us all.
