Your best sound crew might already be in your classroom.

They’re strong
They’re curious
They WANT to help

Start small:
Invite 2–3 students
Give them one job
Teach while you set up

Who’s a student that would LOVE this at your school?

The best sound upgrade is already in your storage closet.
Organize cables by type. Label everything. Remove broken gear. Document your setup with photos. Train a helper once — record it, reuse it forever.
Less chaos at setup = more focus on your students.

💬 What’s the most disorganized part of your sound setup right now?

Your mixer location matters more than most people think.
If you’re mixing from backstage, a rack, or a closet, you’re guessing at what the audience hears.
The best mix decisions happen where the audience is listening.
You have options: a snake, rolling rack, second mixer, tablet control, or portable system.
Where is your school mixer located right now?

If your school sound system still feels like a mystery, this summer could be the turning point.
Because next spring is coming.
The concert.
The musical.
The packed room.
The parents listening for every word their child says.
And if nothing changes, the same problems may show up again:
Feedback.
Mic dropouts.
Guessing at the mixer.
Stress during tech week.
Parents saying, “I couldn’t hear my kid.”

That does not have to be your story next year.
You probably were not taught audio systems in Music Ed.
But you can learn now.

My free checklist, book, and course were created to help elementary music and theatre teachers make real improvements right away.
And the course goes deeper.
Hear the Kids! A Teacher’s Guide to Sound System Mastery will show you how your sound system works, what the controls do, and how to prepare your system so your next show sounds great.

Buy it now, with school funding if you can, and learn sound over the summer.

The worst time to figure out your sound system is during tech week.
The best time is before the pressure is on.
Course, book, and free checklist are in the link in my bio.

The range of human hearing runs from about 20 hertz on the low end to 20-THOUSAND hertz on the high end. Mixers don’t have room for that many zeros. So they cheat a little. 1,000 becomes 1k. 5,000 becomes 5k or 5 kHz.

Your takeaway: There’s a number scale for sound that spans 20Hz to 20kHz. And those numbers next to the EQ k***s on your mixer tell you what’s gonna sound different when you adjust it.

The sound system was messy. The students were magnificent.
A teacher sent me the best update.
Her outgoing 5th grade sound crew helped train the incoming 3rd graders.
There were missing students, tangled cables and a missing power cord.
But the kids problem-solved, filled in, helped each other, and made it happen.
That’s what happens when a teacher gives students ownership instead of needing to have every answer.

One 3rd grader said she loved it because it was “confusing and messy.”
That student may never be the same.

Music Ed taught you how to teach music… but it didn’t teach you how to set up sound for a concert. This is for you.

If you’ve ever stared at a mixer thinking, “I’m a music teacher… why am I also the sound person?” — you’re not alone.

Most teachers were never taught:
• how to wire up mics + monitors
• where to place choir mics (or what mics to even use)
• how to get voices clear and loud enough without feedback
• how to stop wireless mic dropouts
• a repeatable process that lets you hand sound setup off to the kids

That’s why I created my new course: Hear the Kids! — A Teacher’s Guide to Sound System Mastery.

Practical, step-by-step training for real elementary school teachers and real “I have 12 other things to do” teacher life — straight to what makes concerts sound better fast.

Watching the reaction when Weddington was announced as Best Musical for Legally Blonde was such a cool moment to witness. Huge congratulations to them and to EVERY school nominated this year.

I’ve had the privilege of helping several of these programs with sound, and what stands out most is the commitment, growth, leadership, and heart these students and directors pour into their productions.

The Blumeys reminded me again how much talent and passion exists in local school theater.

Proud to have played even a small part in the journey. 🎭
