Part 4 of my hormone series: INSULIN đЏ
Insulin is one of those hormones we hear about all the time, but understanding what it actually does can completely change the way you think about blood sugar, energy, hunger and metabolic health.
When we eat carbohydrates, theyâre broken down into glucose, which enters the bloodstream. In response, your pancreas releases insulin to help move that glucose out of your blood and into your cells, where it can be used for energy or stored for later.
Thatâs a normal and necessary process.
The problem isnât insulin itself, itâs when your cells become less responsive to it.
When that happens, your pancreas may need to produce more and more insulin to keep blood sugar regulated. Over time, this can contribute to insulin resistance and can affect so much more than just your blood sugar.
Think:
⢠increased hunger and cravings
⢠energy crashes
⢠difficulty managing weight
⢠higher triglycerides
⢠changes in reproductive hormones and ovulation
⢠increased risk of prediabetes and type 2 diabetes
And you donât need to eliminate carbs or obsess over every blood sugar spike to support healthy insulin sensitivity.
Some of the basics matter A LOT:
đĽ Pair carbohydrates with protein, fiber and healthy fats
đĽ Eat your protein + veggies before your higher-carb foods when you can
đśââď¸ Take a walk after meals
đď¸ Build and use your muscle
đ´ Prioritize sleep
đ§ââď¸ Manage chronic stress
đĽ Focus on minimally processed, nutrient dense foods most of the time
Itâs another reminder that our hormones donât operate in isolation.
Blood sugar, stress, sleep, movement, muscle, nutrition and reproductive hormones are all communicating with each other.
And sometimes supporting your hormones starts with getting really consistent with the simple stuff.
