Another great insight from Adolph Lippe, MD, perhaps homeopathy's greatest prescriber...

"A progressive way to find the curative remedy can be pursued, even when our best repertories do not assist us. We again resort to the illustration manner.

There are very rare chronic cases of illness in which it seems almost a hopeless task to find the similar remedy. A few prominent symptoms may be covered by a remedy and they vanish after it has been taken for a short time; a new set of symptoms sets in, and you can cover only a few of them, and the same unsatisfactory results follow. In the case alluded to, which might be diagnosticated chronic meningitis, some symptoms predominated. The headache was worse when lying down; relieved by remaining in a sitting position; when the pain increased a sensation like the globus hystericus was complained of; all the coverings of the neck felt too tight and were constantly loosened; fullness, pulsation, and beating in the head. Glonoinum, Belladonna, Gelsemium, had given relief at time; Lachesis only caused aggravation. Belladonna had given out; so had the repertories.

It now seemed as if a remedy related to Belladonna in its sick-making actions had to be found. We took up the little work of the indefatigable Bœnninghausen on Relations, and finally came to Sepia. All other related remedies did not correspond with the case before us. There we found what we had been looking for in the four hundred and seventieth and four hundred and seventy-first symptoms in the fifth volume of Hahnemann’s Chronic Diseases. Symptom 470—“Pressure in the throat, no matter how little it is covered; symptom 471—“Pressure in the throat in the region of the tonsils, as if the handkerchief were tied too tightly around the neck.”

To our not small astonishment, we found, for the first time in this case, all the symptoms of the patient under Sepia, and the benefits she received from this remedy was as astonishing as it was unexpected. In no other way than by examining the relative remedies to the one which had most benefited her could we have been enabled to find the similar. It is not often that the repertories give out, but they did in this exceptionally singular case, and we call our colleague’s attention to a progress forward to find the remedy. The Materia Medica of our school is, as we have shown, progressive, and we may further progress if we enter earnestly upon the study of the relationship existing between the proved drugs."

Another report from front-line physicians during the Great Flu pandemic of 1918-19...

Even beginners in homeopathy had reasonably good results, as Dr. A. B. Hawes of Bridgewater, South Dakota, reported: “About a month before the Spanish influenza reached Bridgewater, I commenced studying up on the subject. I heard time after time of the heavy death rate in Chicago, New York, Boston, and all over the country, and was scared stiff.

When the flu struck Bridgewater, I commenced with two homeopathic remedies, and have found no occasion to deviate there from, except that in certain conditions it has been necessary to use some of the other homeopathic remedies, and with pride I will say that so far I have treated 267 cases beginning with the commencement of the fever and have not had a case of pneumonia or a single death."

Homeopathy During the Great Flu Pandemic of 1918-19

Without exception, homeopaths reported a lower percentage of pneumonia cases across all their populations, because prompt homeopathic treatment cut short the course of influenza and prevented it from progressing to later stages or complications.

As an example, among 28 homeopathic physicians from Central Iowa, 18 answered a detailed survey, in which 5,032 cases of influenza were reported, only 137 of which developed pneumonia. “We should be proud of the small percentage that developed pneumonia, less than 3 percent, against an estimated 30 percent of the Old School."

Another interesting case from Dr. Adolph Lippe's files...

"A gentleman called for assistance on the 20th of September, 1885. For some six months his hair had been falling out in tufts on the back part of his scalp, leaving bald, smooth spots as large as a quarter of a dollar and smaller. He desired aid, so that he might finally not grow bald.

About fifty years old, he always enjoyed good health, and is at present perfectly well. No possible cause could be assigned for the peculiar falling out of the hair in spots. He was a strong homœopath, and I remembered him well, having some seven years previous waited on his six-year old boy in consultation with the late Dr. H. N. Guernsey, in a case of very malignant diphtheria. This case recovered fully under strictly homœopathic treatment.

Again, he wanted strictly homœopathic treatment. He received one single dose of Kali carbonicum CM (Fincke) on the 20th of September. He called again on the 12th day of October, and all the bald spots were covered with a new crop of hair growing splendidly.

Comments from Dr. Lippe: The case here related was by no means one of the many grave cases so often coming under treatment, but it was, nevertheless, a trying case. Apparently but one symptom presented itself, falling off of the hair in spots. The two best known remedies for this affliction are Hepar sulphur and Phosphorus. It was very desirable to detect, if possible, some other symptom which might guide the healer to find the truly homœopathic remedy.

His hair had been exceedingly dry for some months, was not turning gray. Great dryness of the hair we find under Alumina and also under Kali carbonicum, and as Kali carbonicum has produced and healed falling off of the hair, we chose this remedy. With most happy results it was administered. The most difficult task for the careful physician is the finding of the symptoms—the examination of the sick; the more meager the symptoms, the more difficult is the choice of the remedy. In this case the choice was Kali carbonicum. The second very important question is how to administer it. The safest way of administering a well-chosen remedy is to give one single dose of a well-developed potency..."

One of the lessons of the Great Flu Pandemic of 1918-19...

When genuine homeopathic treatment is administered to persons experiencing the first symptoms of an epidemic infection, the progression of the infection is soon mitigated, and it would therefore be very unlikely for such persons to develop the more advanced stages of morbidity and complications, which lead to death.

Professor A. H. Grimmer of the Hering Medical College in Chicago, who was known to be a Hahnemannian, pointed out, while in the midst of the pandemic, “It is a rare thing for a pneumonia to develop if a good homeopathic physician is called during the first twenty-four hours of an attack of influenza.”

Dr. John McBride of Zanesville, Ohio, remarked, “During the epidemic of 1918, when in my city the death rate was very high, it was the other fellow who kept the undertakers busy, so that they said our profession did not have cases of pneumonia. I do think our treatment prevented the development of pneumonia.”

From our esteemed colleagues at the Homeopathy Research Institute (HRI):

A new study by HRI, published in the Journal of Evaluation in Clinical Practice, critically examined claims made in a 2022 paper suggesting ‘shockingly poor’ scientific and ethical standards in homeopathy clinical trials. Through this meta-research study, HRI’s re-analysis found that the original conclusions were based on substantially inaccurate data, which, when corrected, present a far more favourable picture of reporting bias in homeopathy.

HRI’s new publication demonstrates that scientific and ethical standards in homeopathy are sound, and the published evidence remains valid.
