☀️ How much sunscreen should you actually use?

Applying enough sunscreen matters just as much as choosing the right SPF. This helpful graphic from JAMA Dermatology illustrates the “teaspoon rule” for covering exposed skin properly.

A few important reminders:

🧴 Apply sunscreen about 15 minutes before going outside
⏰ Reapply every 2 hours while outdoors
🏊 Reapply after swimming or sweating
👂 Don’t forget the ears, scalp, neck and tops of the feet
✅ Choose a sunscreen you will actually use consistently

No sunscreen blocks every UV ray, and a higher SPF does not eliminate the need to reapply.

Hot take from your dermatologist: fake tanning is not “cheating.” It’s harm reduction. ☀️✨🧴

A real tan is not a sign that your skin is healthier. It’s a sign your skin has responded to UV exposure. That UV exposure is what increases risk of sunburn, premature aging, sun spots, and skin cancer over time. 😬🔥🧬

So yes, if you like a summer glow, a self-tanner is a much better choice than intentionally tanning outside or using a tanning bed. 🌴🌊☀️➡️🧴✨
