Has this happened to you? You see those pesky little floaters in your vision that kind of look like worms moving around?
These floaters are harmless in general, but there are some warning signs that would indicate the need to get to your eye doctor as soon as possible.
Warning signs:
Sudden Increase: A sudden, rapid appearance of many new floaters, like a shower of dark spots, cobwebs, or soot.
Flashes of Light: New or persistent bright flashes or streaks of light in the same eye.
Vision Loss: A dark shadow, gray veil, or “curtain” moving across or obstructing your peripheral (side) or central vision.
Red Flags: Any eye pain, severe redness, or floaters that occur after an eye injury or recent eye surgery. (Source: Mayo Clinic)
Additionally, many patients come in because of flashes of light without the presence of floaters. Sometimes, migraines can be the cause, and other times, the flashes could be related to other conditions like a retinal detachment.
Dr. White can assess the problem in our office. We have the latest in eye care technology available like a camera that can see a 200° view of the retina without the need to be dilated.
Keep an eye out (pun intended) for any new and/or rapidly changing symptoms.
