Do you know your blood pressure numbers? High blood pressure may not have any signs. So it’s important to get regular checks.

Talk with your doctor about what’s healthy for you. And if your numbers are high, your doctor can tell you how to lower them. Here are a few ways you can help keep your blood pressure healthy.

• Eat healthy foods, like fruits, vegetables, lean meats and whole grains.
• Choose foods lower in salt and fat.
• Get some exercise—just 30 minutes a day can make a difference.
• Quit smoking if you smoke.
• Get some rest.
• Find healthy ways to deal with stress.

Taking medication exactly as your doctor says can help you stay healthy. But some drugs aren’t safe to take together. Medications can interact with:

• Other medicines
• Vitamins and supplements
• Certain foods and drinks
• Some health conditions

It’s important to talk with your doctor about all the drugs you take, even over-the-counter drugs, vitamins and supplements. Your doctor can tell you if any of your drugs aren’t safe to take together. And they can help you find a different drug if you need it.

Asthma symptoms aren’t always the same. Having an action plan helps you handle them.

An asthma action plan lays out steps for if you’re doing well, if your symptoms get worse and if you’re having an asthma attack.

Talk with your doctor about your asthma action plan. And if your child has asthma, it’s important for them to have an action plan, too. This template from the CDC can help you get started: http://spr.ly/6188BBtedq

May is National Foster Care Month. We know foster parents have a lot of love to give — and a lot to think about. Keeping a record of your child’s health history can help keep them healthy. Even if you don’t have old records, now’s a great time to start keeping track.

It’s a good idea to keep a list of your child’s:
• Health care visits
• Vaccines
• Health conditions
• Medications

Regular breast cancer screenings can help you protect your health. These screenings can find cancer earlier, when it can be easier to treat. And they may even find cancer before you or your doctor notice any symptoms.

Women age 40 to 74 with average risk for breast cancer should get a mammogram every two years. A mammogram is an x-ray of the breast. The CDC says a mammogram is the best way for most women to be screened for breast cancer. Your doctor may recommend screenings more often based on your health and family history. Talk with your doctor about your screening options.

We cover breast cancer screenings at no extra cost for our members. Ask your doctor at your next checkup if it’s time for your screening.

Warmer weather means it’s a great time to get outside and get active. Walking, running, jumping rope and riding a bike are all great ways to be active outdoors. But it’s important to be safe in the heat.

These tips from the American Heart Association can help you have fun and stay safe outside.

• Try to avoid exercising outside in the afternoon. It’s usually the hottest part of the day.
• Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
• Dress for the weather. Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing. Moisture-wicking fabrics are a plus.
• Talk with your doctor first. If you’re new to exercise or changing your routine, your doctor can help you find a safe plan for you.
