Late July is one of my favorite times of the year to shop local. If you've been thinking about adding more whole foods to your diet, now is the perfect time to visit your local farmers market.
Right now, you can find an abundance of fresh:
🍅 Tomatoes
🥒 Cucumbers
🌽 Sweet corn
🫑 Bell peppers
🍆 Eggplant
🫛 Green beans
🥬 Zucchini & summer squash
🌶️ Okra
🥕 Carrots
🧅 Onions
🧄 Garlic
🥬 Kale & Swiss chard
🌿 Fresh herbs like basil, parsley, dill, and cilantro
🍉 Watermelon
🍈 Cantaloupe
🍑 Peaches
🫐 Blueberries
🍓 Blackberries
From a functional medicine perspective, eating seasonally offers more than just great flavor.
When produce is harvested at its natural peak, it typically contains higher levels of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and beneficial plant compounds that help nourish your gut microbiome, support healthy immune function, and reduce inflammation. Because local produce spends less time in storage and transportation, it often reaches your plate fresher and with more of its nutritional value intact.
One of the simplest ways to improve your health is to increase the variety of plants you eat. Every fruit, vegetable, herb, and spice provides a unique combination of fibers and phytonutrients that feed different beneficial bacteria in your gut. The more diversity on your plate, the greater the opportunity to support a healthier microbiome.
🌱 **This week's challenge:** Visit your local farmers market and choose one fruit or vegetable you've never tried before—or one you haven't eaten in years. Your gut (and your local farmers) will thank you.
