Last September I raced the Olympic at Chelanathon and got one thing badly wrong.

I felt a twinge in my leg on the back half of the bike. I did what I thought was right and started taking salt immediately. I just didn't have enough with me.

My leg locked up in transition. Then I ran the entire 10K on the edge of a cramp, holding a line between as fast as I could go and one step too fast. I finished. I never got to run my own race.

For a year I told that story as an electrolyte problem. Then I read the research and looked at my own splits, and I was wrong about why.

So I wrote it all up for this year's athletes. Free, no catch:

→ How long heat acclimation actually takes, and how fast you lose it
→ A sauna protocol built on the research, with real temperatures and times
→ How to measure your own sweat rate for free
→ What actually causes cramps in triathletes, and why the usual answer is wrong
→ Three other things I learned on that course the hard way

Every study cited by name.

The run course has little to no shade and you'll be on it between 10:30 and noon. You've got 23 days. That's enough time to adapt, but only if you start this week.

And I'll be at the race. I'm running a free athlete recovery and prep zone on September 19. Open to athletes, volunteers, and staff. Come see me.

One more thing worth sharing. Chelanathon just launched the Community Catalyst Program, a free way for Lake Chelan area businesses to reach the 1,000 people coming for race weekend. No sponsorship required, fully underwritten by Mill Bay Marine and Manson Mini Storage. After the summer this area has had, that's a generous thing to do. If you run a local business, email [email protected].
