We often think of spiritual growth in terms of what we come to understand or experience. A profound meditation, an unexpected moment of connection, or a teaching that changes our perspective can be deeply meaningful.

But there is another dimension of spiritual development that receives less attention: the development of our spiritual capacity.

Consider the difference between experiencing a moment of profound peace and developing the ability to return to a more centered state when life becomes difficult. Or between recognizing that we are affected by the energy around us and learning practices for working intentionally with our own energy.

These are capacities we can cultivate.

One of the things I value about the work of the Modern Mystery School and the Lineage of King Salomon is that spiritual development is approached through a combination of knowledge, practical training, direct experience, and initiation.

Empower Thyself is the foundational training and initiation in this tradition. I am excited to be offering it this weekend!

During the two days, participants learn practices for clearing, strengthening, and protecting their energy, along with teachings that offer a deeper framework for understanding themselves and their spiritual development.

They also receive an initiation into the Lineage of King Salomon. Within the tradition, initiation is understood in part to increase the Light available to an individual supporting greater access to their spiritual potential.

After more than 25 years of spiritual inquiry and study, this combination of practical training and initiation profoundly changed my own spiritual path.
What I appreciate most is that the work continues beyond the classroom. The practices become part of daily life, and the initiation establishes a foundation for further development.

When people become interested in spiritual development, they often assume they need to become more perceptive.

They want to strengthen their intuition, become more sensitive to energy, receive clearer guidance, or develop a greater awareness of what exists beyond ordinary perception.

But what if you are already perceiving quite a lot?

Some people seem naturally attuned to subtle information. They walk into a room and immediately notice that something feels different. They sense tension between two people before anyone says anything. Their own state can change dramatically depending on who they are around. They have strong impressions about people or situations without always knowing where those impressions came from.

For some, this sensitivity is obvious. For others, it has been happening for so long that they don’t even recognize it as unusual. They simply know that certain environments exhaust them, some people affect them strongly, or they sometimes know things without being able to explain how they know them.

The temptation is to call all of this intuition.

I think we need to be more careful than that.

Human beings are extraordinarily perceptive creatures. We are constantly registering facial expressions, tone of voice, body language, changes in behavior, environmental cues, memories, emotional associations, and patterns we may not consciously recognize. We can also project, become anxious, misread situations, and interpret what we perceive through the lens of what we hope or fear is true.

And from a spiritual perspective, there is another category of information to consider: energetic and intuitive perception.

The challenge is that all of these can feel compelling from the inside.

Feeling something strongly does not necessarily tell you where it came from or what it means.

That distinction is important because perception and interpretation are not the same capacity.

You may accurately perceive that something has shifted in a relationship and incorrectly decide what caused it. You may notice that your energy changes around a particular person without knowing whether you are responding to them, to something they evoke in you, or to your own expectations. You may have an intuitive impression that proves remarkably accurate, and another that turns out to have been fear.

This is why I don’t think spiritual development is simply about becoming more open or learning to trust every feeling.

There are more spiritual teachings available to us than perhaps ever before. And while that gives us incredible freedom to explore, it can also make finding your path surprisingly difficult.

How do you know what is actually right for you?

A spiritual path should do more than interest you intellectually or give you spiritual experiences. Over time, it should positively change the way you live. It should help you know yourself more deeply, develop greater discernment, strengthen your relationship with the sacred, and become more capable of living what you know.

𝗗𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗦𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗚𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝗗𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁?

It’s relatively easy to feel centered when the conditions around us support being centered.

The harder test is what happens when life doesn’t cooperate.

You slept badly. Someone says something that triggers you. A relationship feels uncertain. Work is overwhelming. You have an important decision to make and don’t know what to do.

This is what I sometimes think of as the Tuesday afternoon test:

What does your spiritual practice offer you then? On the average day where maybe things are not quite going as planned.

One of the things I value about Empower Thyself is that you leave with things you can actually do in addition to learning and getting more attuned to deep esoteric wisdom.

You learn daily practices for clearing and strengthening your energy, tools for working with attention and focus, and a framework that helps you better understand what you are experiencing.

Over time, this can become very practical. You catch yourself before reacting, recognize when something has knocked you off center and know how to work with it, or recover more quickly from a difficult experience that might once have affected you for days. This has a profound effect on your life.

Empower Thyself isn't about becoming someone who is never overwhelmed, hurt, angry, or uncertain.

It gives you more ways to work with yourself when you are.

For me, that is one of the most important measures of spiritual development: not only what we understand or experience, but what our practice helps us become capable of in the lives we are actually living.

WHAT THE PATH ASKS OF YOU BEFORE IT GIVES ANYTHING

There's a question that comes up early: isn't it more efficient to take only what applies to my situation, rather than move through a structure that includes things I don't think I need? If you already know what's not working, why not go directly to the fix? Why learn extra material, or move through steps, that don't look relevant to the specific thing in front of you?

Here's a direct answer: the piece you'd be taking isn't as separable as it looks. What makes a healing hold, or a tool actually work, isn't only the piece itself; it is what is necessary to be ready to receive it. Skip the structure and you don't get the same piece faster. You get a lighter version of it, one that tends not to hold once you're back in ordinary life, or further down the path.

But what people are really asking is often: can't I get there faster, and when can I expect results? While some results are immediate, and many go far beyond what other approaches can offer, the deep and systemic change this work is known for isn't built from one healing or one initiation. It's the product of walking the path. And the path is walked one step at a time.

It also requires some very specific things from us: reciprocity and choice. Understand these, and "why can't I just take what I need" stops feeling like an arbitrary restriction. It starts making sense on its own terms. What we receive no longer seems like something that's given or withheld, but something we become worthy of through our own actions.

Reciprocity: what you put in, you get out

This isn't a metaphor. It's closer to a mechanism. The path responds in kind to what it's given — consistency for consistency, honesty for honesty, discipline for discipline, integration for integration. There's no shortcut around this exchange, because it isn't a rule imposed from outside. It's how the relationship actually works.

Consistency means showing up in ordinary conditions, not only in the moments that feel significant. Honesty means looking at what's actually true about your patterns, rather than the version of yourself you'd prefer to offer. Discipline means continuing the practice on the days it doesn't feel inspired. Integration means letting what you've received actually change how you live, rather than filing it away as an experience you once had.

Each of these is a form of giving. What comes back, in time, is proportionate: clarity that's actually livable, capacity that holds under real conditions, a relationship with your own development that you can trust. None of this is rationed by anyone but you, through your own actions. It's earned in the plainest sense of the word.

It shows up in small, unremarkable moments more often than dramatic ones. It's the practice you do on an ordinary Tuesday, with nothing urgent asking for it. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗚𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝗟𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗮 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗟𝗼𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗜𝘁𝘀 𝗥𝗼𝗼𝘁𝘀

It is easy to assume that a practice is the practice no matter where it comes from. That a breathing technique, a healing modality, or a meditation carries its full value on its own, wherever it lands. It does not. Something is always lost when a practice is separated from the lineage that holds it. Here is some of what that loss actually looks like.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝗻 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀. Inside a lineage, someone is watching. Not to control, but to notice when a tool is being misapplied, rushed, or bent toward something it was never meant to do. Outside that structure, there is no one positioned to catch the drift.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀. Practices within a tradition are usually sequenced for a reason; one thing prepares the ground for the next. When a practice is lifted out and offered on its own, that sequence is gone. People end up doing advanced work without the foundation that made it sound, and they rarely know what is missing, because nothing tells them.

𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗽𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗱. An initiation is never self-administered. Someone else determines whether this is the right moment, for this person, with this level of preparation. That is not merely a formality; it is one of the ways a lineage protects the people inside it. Disconnected from that structure, readiness becomes a guess, usually made by the person least able to see it clearly: themselves.

𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹-𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀. A teacher, or a community, can tell you when something is off – from watching you do it. Alone, there is no mirror. Whatever pattern is forming keeps forming, often unseen or without the means to correct it.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗮 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴. Every tool sits inside a larger system and offers understanding of how and why things function the way that they do. Keeping the Peace and creating Peace are not the same thing.

Sometimes keeping the Peace comes at a cost.

We stay quiet.
We give in.
We sacrifice what we need so everyone else can remain comfortable.

That's not Peace. That's sacrifice.

Creating Peace is different.

Peace is something we cultivate.

We plant it.
We tend it.
We nourish it.

And sometimes creating Peace means having the courage to disturb what only looked peaceful in the first place.

Don't just keep the Peace.
CREATE IT.
