Jaw grading awareness is essential for speech and chewing tasks. Use a scale from 1-4 as shown above while watching in a mirror to create jaw grading awareness for your patients. Then take the mirror away to create awareness through ‘feel’ and proprioception of the movement. Adapted from Sacks, S. (n.d.) An Introduction of SATPAC and Remediating the S and R Sounds. Form and Function always work together, for better or for worse. This connection impacts breathing, sleep, speech, and swallowing.

A few sleep disordered breathing symptoms that aren’t always considered:

- Teeth grinding - it’s a way for our body to wake us up just enough to get a breath

- Bedwetting - insufficient breathing during sleep does not allow us to get into the deep sleep needed to slow down this system at night

- Daytime hyperactivity - a way to stay awake during the day when our brain and bodies are actually exhausted

- Difficulty falling asleep - your brain and body have been ‘on’ all day trying to keep you awake and asking it to calm down enough to fall asleep can be difficult

- Staying asleep - if breathing is difficult while sleeping, your body will wake you up to improve breathing

Orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMDs) are not exclusive to children and adults!

Infants and toddlers can also experience abnormal function or development of the muscles and structures of the mouth and face.

Signs and symptoms can include mouth breathing, low tongue rest posture, narrow/vaulted palate, recessed mandible (lower jaw), lip and tongue tie, snoring, and poor sleep. These may cause difficulties with feeding, swallowing, chewing, breathing, and early speech development.
