Behavior is communication.
Before asking, “How do we stop this?” it can help to ask, “What is my child trying to communicate?”
Are they tired? Overwhelmed? Trying to avoid something? Seeking help? Looking for attention?

Visuals can help children understand expectations, routines, choices, and transitions.
They do not have to be complicated. A simple routine chart, choice card, timer, or picture schedule can make a big difference.
Tip: keep visuals simple and practice using them when your child is calm.

Specific praise helps children understand exactly what behavior you want to see again.
Instead of only saying “Good job,” try:
“Great job asking for help.”
“I love how you waited calmly.”
“You cleaned up when I asked.”
The more specific the praise, the more helpful it can be.

ABA tip: offer simple choices when possible.
Instead of only saying, “Put your shoes on,” try:
“Shoes now or in 2 minutes?”
“Blue cup or green cup?”
“Puzzle or coloring first?”
Choices can help children feel more involved while still supporting follow-through.
