Nothing goes to waste on the homestead! šŸ‘ We use the rougher wool and fabric scraps that arenā€™t suitable for spinning as natural insulation, tucking them into cracks and crevices to help keep out drafts. Wool is warm, breathable, renewable, and naturally resistant to moistureā€”another wonderful way our sheep provide for us! šŸ¤

ON A HOMESTEAD, NOTHING GOES TO WASTE.

Even the extra fleece from our sheep gets put to work.

Instead of throwing it away, I use the leftover wool to fill the cracks and crevices in the barn before winter. Itā€™s one of those simple, old fashioned homesteading tricks that just makes sense.

Raise it. Use it. Repurpose it. Waste less.

$65 per person | Holistic Homestead NH. October 24, 10-3. Includes a light lunch.

Discover the beautiful colors hiding in gardens, fields, roadsides, and even common weeds!

Join us at Holistic Homestead NH for a hands-on introduction to the traditional art of natural dyeing. Weā€™ll explore how flowers, leaves, roots, berries, bark, and other plant materials can be transformed into a beautiful palette of color for wool and other natural fibers.

During the class, youā€™ll learn about:

ā€¢ Different types of dye plants
ā€¢ Preparing wool with mordants
ā€¢ Extracting color from plants
ā€¢ Transferring natural color to fiber
ā€¢ Growing and sustainably foraging your own dye materials
ā€¢ Using invasive plants and common weeds to create gorgeous colors

Weā€™ll demonstrate the process using seasonal plants and several dye pots. Best of all, weā€™ll be working with fiber from our very own sheep raised here at Holistic Homestead NH! Youā€™ll have the opportunity to see and feel the wool while learning how it goes from sheep to naturally dyed fiber.

The class will be taught by Inga Sidor, a veterinary pathologist from southern New Hampshire and an experienced knitter, spinner, and weaver. Inga is a member of the Southeast New Hampshire Spinning Guild and has a special passion for creating natural dyes from plants that can be grown or sustainably gathered throughout the Northeast. She is always scouting gardens, fields, ditches, and roadsides for unexpected sources of color!

Come spend a wonderful day learning, experimenting, and discovering natureā€™s incredible color palette here on the homestead.
