🐴 Signs Your Horse May Have a Hoof Abscess
One of the most common (and painful) issues we see in horses is a hoof abscess. The tricky part? They can come on suddenly and look a lot like something much more serious. Knowing what to watch for can save your horse a lot of discomfort—and help you act quickly.
Here are the key signs to look out for:
1. Sudden Lameness
If your horse goes from sound to severely lame almost overnight, a hoof abscess is one of the first things to suspect. Many owners describe it as “they looked fine yesterday, and today they can barely walk.”
2. Heat in the Hoof
Feel for unusual warmth in the hoof compared to the others. Increased heat often indicates inflammation and infection building pressure inside the hoof.
3. Strong Digital Pulse
A bounding or stronger-than-normal pulse at the back of the pastern is a classic indicator. This is one of the most reliable early signs.
4. Reluctance to Bear Weight
Your horse may point the affected foot, shift weight constantly, or avoid putting pressure on it altogether.
5. Sensitivity to Hoof Pressure
They may react strongly when the hoof is picked up, cleaned, or when pressure is applied to a specific area.
6. Swelling in the Lower Limb
In some cases, you might notice swelling in the pastern or fetlock as the infection builds.
7. Drainage (Later Stage)
Once the abscess finds a way out, you may see drainage at the sole, heel bulbs, or even at the coronary band. While messy, this usually brings significant relief.
