The Work Must Change the Conditions It Studies
By Yvonne Monique Livingston LLC
As a researcher, the work must change the conditions it studies.
That is my story.
My life is changing because the work shifted.
The work shifted from survival into structure.
The work shifted from testimony into practical expertise.
The work shifted from community labor into business partnership.
The work shifted from being seen as help into being recognized as professional service.
The work shifted from being talked about into being documented, funded, and developed.
This is why research cannot only observe harm. Research must help transform the conditions that produce harm.
If poverty, trauma, violence, grief, service barriers, system mistrust, and economic hardship are being studied, then the people closest to those conditions must also benefit from the research, funding, training, and service development connected to their lives.
The goal is not to keep returning to the same communities to study the same pain.
The goal is to build pathways where the knowledge produced from lived experience helps create new conditions: stability, opportunity, trust, care, healing, income, authorship, ownership, and self-governance.
My life changing is part of the evidence.
It shows what can happen when lived experience is not only treated as story, but as practical expertise.
It shows what can happen when community knowledge is not only collected, but contracted.
It shows what can happen when the person who survived the condition becomes part of designing the solution.
It shows what can happen when the table is shared.
This is the research.
This is the practice.
This is the shift.
