The Rush Art BRIDGES Program will begin this fall! ​

Dr. Aimee Karstens, Jeffrey Wolfe and various Art Therapists through the Parkinson’s Foundation Community Grant, have organized the Rush Art BRIDGES Program. This program will bring individuals with Parkinson’s disease and their loved ones together for social connection and to improve well-being through a variety of artistic modalities.​

What is Parkinson's? ​

Come join the Central Illinois Parkinson's Support Group retreat for a weekend filled with learning and connecting with others affected by Parkinson's Disease. ​

Excitingly, Dr. Christina Swan, movement disorder neurologist at Rush University, will be presenting on "Next Steps in Parkinson's Management" during the Saturday morning session. Additionally, a number of other professionals will be hosting a Q&A and presenting on palliative care, exercise, medications, and more. ​

When: September 11-13, 2026​

Moving Day Chicago: A Walk for Parkinson's is less than two months away!
Last year we had a great turnout, and we're excited to be back again this year.

Rush University Medical Center is proud to collaborate with Moving Day Chicago. We'll be hosting team "RUSH PD" and tabling at the event once again. Team captains are Dr. Jori Fleisher and Dan P Baginski.

This year, the event will be held on Sunday, October 4 at 9:00 AM CT at Lincoln Park Grove 2 in Chicago, IL.

Last month our Movement Disorders Research Coordinators Jackie, Kayli (slide 1) and Savannah hosted our very first Coordinator Career Day! It was a great day of learning, networking, and career exploration 🩺💊🔬👩🏻‍🏫​

The event featured seven health professionals (slides 2-4) who shared their unique career journeys into medicine, industry, academia, and other healthcare professions. Attendees had the opportunity to hear firsthand about each speakers path, ask questions and learn how a coordinator role can serve as a launchpad to many different careers. ​

This week we are excited to spotlight Dr. Alana Kirby, a movement disorders neurologist here at Rush University Medical Center.​

Dr. Kirby cares for a wide variety of individuals with Movement Disorders, providing long term and comprehensive treatment for chronic neurologic conditions. She co-directs the Rush Parkinson’s Disease and Care-partner symposium, the National Ataxia Foundation Center of Excellence at Rush, and the Rush Movement Disorders Brain Bank. Her clinical interests are mirrored in the lab, with ongoing projects including mitochondria in Parkinson’s disease and microplastics in neurodegenerative diseases. ​

What are we studying? We are exploring whether a computerized training program can improve social skills and quality of life while decreasing caregiver burden.​

Who's eligible to participate? Individuals with Huntington’s Disease and their caregivers ​

How long is participation? 6-12 weeks with two study visits (up to 2 hours per visit)​

Last week RUSH hosted its annual Faculty Recognition Reception, honoring recipients of the RUSH Faculty Excellence Awards. We are proud to congratulate Movement Disorders Neurologist Dr. Jori Fleisher on receiving the Excellence in Research Award!​

For more than a decade, Jori Fleisher has dedicated her career to advancing Parkinson’s Disease and Lewy Body Dementia research, most recently leading the NIH-funded PERSEVERE in Lewy Body Dementia study, which focuses on caregiver peer mentor support and education.​

Thank you, Dr. Fleisher, for your commitment to improving the lives of individuals living with Parkinson’s Disease and Lewy Body Dementia and their caregivers. This recognition is truly well deserved!

On June 3rd, two of our amazing senior movement disorder fellows graduated from our Rush University Movement Disorders program! Dr. Shashika Rodrigo and Dr. Joe Staffetti started with us in 2024 and have worked alongside our attending physicians to learn and deliver excellent care to our patients. In addition to treating patients, each of them designed research studies with the aim to expand our knowledge on assessing and treating patients with movement disorders.

Dr. Shashika Rodrigo will continue on as an Attending Physician and Assistant Professor at University of Texas San Antonio.
Dr. Joe Staffetti will continue on as an Attending Physician and Assistant Professor at University of South Florida in Tampa.

We wish both of them the best of luck on their journey as Attending Physicians. They will truly be missed!

Meet the Team Monday! ​

We’re excited to spotlight Dr. Neepa Patel, a movement disorders neurologist at Rush University Medical Center.​

Dr. Patel specializes in advanced therapies with Parkinson’s disease,
essential tremor, dystonia, and related conditions including botulinum toxin, deep brain stimulation (DBS), and MRI guided focus ultrasound.​

She is the Principal investigator for the Regenerate PD study and her research interests include improving quality of care and outcomes with new and advanced therapies for movement disorders patients. ​
